STLP ENGAGES THE KY ACADEMIC STANDARDS FOR TECHNOLOGY

The recently adopted KAS for Technology are woven into the STLP Project Cycle, as they are a natural fit for the project/problem based learning foundation STLP has built upon since 1994.

Each level rubric ties directly to the main concepts of the standards. As Levels progress, scoring correlates to skills and applications more & more.

LEVEL i: PITCH

What’s New About Level i ?

Level i: “Districts” - important first step of the STLP Project Cycle.

Level i is a self-guided way for STLP groups/teams to:

  • Organize project ideas
  • Get early feedback from known adults/peers
  • Select the strongest projects to advance to Level 1: Regionals
  • Experience what it's like to share project ideas before Regionals

Level i is made to fit your needs:

  • Takes place within your school/district (no additional out-of district travel)
  • Do Level i at a time/place of your choosing (between Aug. 1 and Nov. 17)
  • Can be a peer-to-peer pitch just within your STLP or class -- or go big and have a district wide pitch showcase!

Pro-Tips:

  • Invite Digital Learning Coaches and/or tech dept. as guests to give feedback
  • Invite the same people to be your volunteer Judge for Level 1: Regionals
  • Consider Level i as a fun kick off to the STLP Project Cycle and an opportunity to build excitement around STLP

How Do We “Do” Level i: Districts?

There’s no wrong way to do Level i -- unless you skip it! Here are some guides to get your project teams started:

Level i: Implementation Statement

  • Helps teams at all grade levels focus their project goals into specific terms
  • Big part of helping students reel in GIANT ideas in to Big Achievable Ideas

Level i: Project Planner

  • Utilize the Project Planner to introduce students to the concepts of the Level 1 Guiding Questions
  • May not be ready to answer all the Project Planner questions at Level i… but will identify areas of focus ahead of Level 1
  • The Level i Project Planner is the same as the Level 1 Project Planner -- Li introduces, L1 implements

How Do We Select Which Projects Advance to L1 Regionals?

  • Since Level i: Districts is still so new for 2023, the selection criteria is currently remains a local choice.
  • Consider Level i as a vital part of the Project Cycle, but know there is no official “rules” about which projects your STLP submits for Level 1 Regionals.

LEVEL i & LEVEL 1 PROJECT PLANNER

When you do your local Level i pitch, using the Project Planner will be super helpful. It's like a magic tool for coming up with great ways to share your project ideas.

This tool helps you organize and plan your project. It also helps you to start thinking about your answers to the important Guided Questions you’ll later address in the Level 1 scoring guide.

Even though the Project Planner is the same for Level i and Level 1, your answers should get better as you move from one level to the next. As you work on your project, you'll get better at explaining how it connects to the seven guiding questions. Remember, Level i is just the beginning where you pitch your project idea out loud for the first time. Its ok if its not perfect.

Lots of teams use their Level 1 Project Planner answers to make a cool presentation to impress the Level 1 judges. Don't forget to check the Level 1 rubric and make sure you answer the Guiding Questions for the judges.

The Project Planner can be found on the STLP Super Sheet and here.

Brainstorm together...review past Champions for inspiration. Some tools to consider:

  • Padlet
  • Shared Google Doc
  • MS Whiteboard
  • Jamboard
  • View 2021 State Champ Projects

Updated for 2023 Regionals: Although your school may generate a number of project ideas, select the top 4* to submit for STLP. Consider having teams pitch their project idea to the school or small group to pick.

  • Opportunity for teams to practice
  • Use the Level 1 rubric to help “score”
  • *Gold Status schools can submit up to 5

STLP Projects address real-life concerns, issues, or challenges that students identify. This year, the Level 1 Project was redesigned to be:

  • Welcoming to project teams new to STLP
  • Flexible to accomodate evolving ideas
  • Less time intensive; respectful of challenges
  • Make it easy for more teams to participate

Level 1 Projects are not intended to be full presentations, but a short, digitally based “elevator pitch” given to live Judges via remote connection (platform TBA).

  • Choose how you give your pitch
  • Short video, slides, a doc, etc… use whatever fits
  • Emphasis on Guiding Questions from rubric
  • Total time with judges is 10 minutes maximum. The progress/plan update should allow for several minutes of questions from judges.

Imagine you have a great idea and you step into an elevator with the one person in the world who can help bring your idea to life. You have their attention for the length of the elevator ride to explain your idea.

  • Keep your pitch succinct
  • Pitch should get people excited about your plan
  • Pitch should address the Guiding Questions in the updated Level 1 Rubric

Utilize the Level 1 Design Thinking Module:

  • Grab the doc and utilize with students ahead of Level 1 Presentations
  • Self assessment or peer review of presentation ideas will help strengthen project pitches

LEVEL 1 PROJECT: PROGRESS

11 of 19

LEVEL 1 PLANNER & GUIDING QUESTIONS

During Level 1: Regionals, teams share an update on their project. They talk about what they've already done, what they've started, and what they plan to do next. They do this while answering seven important questions in the scoring guide.

To get ready for this, teams can use a Level 1 Planner to organize their answers before making a presentation.

Even though the Project Planner is the same for Level i and Level 1, at this stage, teams are getting ready for Regionals, so their answers should be more detailed and complete. As students work on their project, they should get better at explaining how their project relates to the seven guiding questions.

Teams use their responses on the Level 1 Project Planner to create a slideshow or another kind of presentation to impress the Level 1 judges. They should also check the Level 1 rubric and make sure they address the Guiding Questions for the judges.

The Project Planner copy can be downloaded here.

PROJECT PROGRESS” RUBRIC

LEVEL 1 - Regional Round of Project Cycle

Sharing the progress on the project should include highlighting areas currently being actively worked on, areas completed, and a general timeline for other aspects yet to occur. The Progress Report is a succinct description of your project plan presented in a way that makes it easy for judges to access and understand your vision and desired outcomes

  • Be prepared to address each of the 7 Guiding Questions in Level 1 Rubric
  • 4 Projects per school allowed (5 for Gold Status STLPs)

Grade Divisions: K-5th, 6th-8th, 9th-12th

Team Event: Team size unlimited, but select up to 4 presenters to represent

Format: Teams choose presentation tools to give their progress report

  • Each project will have a 10 minute window with judges. Report should leave enough time for judges to ask several questions. Utilize available tools to tell the best story of the project
  • Connect with others to gather peer feedback
  • A good camera and microphone will give best presentation experience
  • STLP will announce the video conferencing platform to be utilized in advance so presenters can become familiar with the tools

Judging: Done entirely online.

  • Teams will present their project progress/plan to judges (process TBA)
  • After the project pitch, judges will ask questions of the presenters

Tips: Done entirely online.

  • Keep your progress report to the point while addressing all the Guided Questions -- that is majority of how judges will score teams
  • Be prepared to engage judges in conversation.
  • Your enthusiasm for your project idea is critical to convincing judges you should go to Level 2

Level 1 Scores Report

What Does It All Mean?

Project teams present their current progress live to judges via remote conference software at Level 1. After discussing their project idea and taking questions, Judges will provide feedback in the form of scores for each guided question response (see L1 Rubric) and with comments. Based on overall scores, judges will designate projects as one of the following:

Project is On Track!

Advancing to Level 2 at State

Score of 40 - 30

Judges found your project progress update to be well thought out, succinct, & informative. The project team confidently shared their responses to each of the guiding questions and proudly displayed the STLP logo within their presentation materials. This project should continue developing in preparation for STLP State.

Not Yet Ready for L2

Update for Chance to Advance

Score of 29 - 15

Your project idea is off to a good start, but Judges decided it needs some adjustments before its ready to advance to State. Use their feedback to submit how the the team will adjust the project before presenting at Level 2 in Lexington. “Not Yet” means your team has a second chance. Take advantage of it.

Time to Reboot

Back to the Drawing Board

Score of 14 - 0

Review the feedback to see why judges determined the project needs to pause. While this means the end of the road for the project in STLP competition this year, the team might begin thinking about rebooting this project for next year…or developing an totally new idea. Make this a learning opportunity.

  • Sometimes, Judges will return later for clarifying questions, etc.
  • Judges are not interested in your practiced presentation, but prefer having an interactive conversation with your presenters.
  • Judges will be looking for teams that can confidently and enthusiastically explain why their project should be selected to represent the best of education technology for the entire state of Kentucky.
  • Plan to remain at your project table until the announcement is made that Level 3 Judging has concluded.
