1. Introduction

  • Project IGNITE - Intergenerational Community Engagement is a joint programme between St John Brigade (SJB) and Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) conducted annually.

  • The programme provides Secondary 3 Cadets and Youth Officers an opportunity to organise a community engagement project for elderly living in nursing home across Singapore.
  • This will be the 3rd consecutive year we are running this programme.

1. Introduction

  • The Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) is an organisation under the Ministry of Health. Established in 2009, they are the care integrators for the nation.
  • One of their key roles is to refer patients from hospitals to Community Care services (such as Nursing Homes, Senior Care centres, etc.). They also help to enhance the healthcare system by organizing trainings to enhance capacity and capabilities to better support Singapore’s ageing population.
  • AIC aims to empower seniors and caregivers to stay well and active, with a peace of mind and to transform the care community so the people live well and age gracefully.
  • They do this also as part of efforts to support nation wide initiatives such as Healthier SG and Age Well SG.

Visit www.aic.sg to find out more about AIC!

2. Objectives & Learning Outcomes

  • Provide an opportunity for SJB cadets to learn about ageing, dementia and elderly care in Singapore.

  • Allow SJB cadets and youth officers to develop a sense of empathy for others and to inculcate the values such as Respect, Care and Harmony.

  • Allow SJB cadets and youth officers to be an active contributor in promoting independent and healthy living for our seniors.

  • Participants who successfully complete Project IGNITE will be awarded a CPB badge.

3. Participants

  • Youth Officers (Year 5 to 6) will organise and conduct Project IGNITE. They will lead a team of cadets during each visit to the nursing homes.

  • Participating SJB cadets have to be at least Secondary 3 or older. Each session comprises about 20 cadets.

  • SJB cadets must have cleared Essentials of Healthcare (EHC)*.

  • SJB cadets will be deployed to one of the three nursing homes selected for the Project IGNITE in 2026.

*Essentials of Home Nursing (EHN) & Essentials of First Aid (EFA) have been combined to form Essentials of Healthcare (EHC) since May 2024.

11. FAQs

  • What happens if a Nursing Home (NH) has an outbreak of disease?
    • In this unfortunate circumstance, once we are informed by the NH, we will inform the Corps/participants to reschedule for a makeup session.
  • What happens if our cadet is on sick leave?
    • With a valid Medical Certificate (MC), the cadet can be excused for that session and a make-up session will be arranged.
  • Can the timings for the NH sessions be moved later?
    • Unfortunately, no, NHs has strict timings for residents to adhere to for activities and dinner. We can provide an official timetable for teachers to obtain approval from school leaders for students to leave school earlier for the program.
  • Will VIA Hours be given for partial completion of the program?
    • Yes, they will be calculated based on attendance. However, AIC badge will not be issued.

  • Do we have to arrange for own transport?
    • Yes, Corps will have to arrange for their own transport from school to the Nursing Home.
  • Who do I contact for administrative matters/queries?
