Break Cards
Break Cards are a great way for students to ask for a break nonverbally.
They allow students to:
- functionally escape a task.
- step away from a difficult task and refocus.
-regain control and use calming strategies.

Body Check Visual
Body check visuals are used to show students what behaviors are expected of them. It is best to focus our attention on the behaviors that we want to see.
Visual Schedules and Task Steps
Visual Schedules allow students to see the day ahead of them so they know what is coming next. This visual helps frontload students who have difficulty staying on task, transitioning, or do not like change in their routines.
Calming Strategies Visuals
Calming Strategies Ring
A calming strategies ring shows students multiple techniques they can use to help calm their bodies. These rings mostly focus on breathing exercises as well as sensory input such as body squeezes and hand squeezes. Click on the photo to the right for a PDF that you can print out.
Break Options Board
The break options board is a quick and easy way to run a preference assessment when students need to take a break. These boards allow you to limit their time with a preferred reinforcer by engaging them in a neutral activity to calm down and refocus.

Problem Meter and Zones of Regulation
Problem meters allow students to gauge the severity of a problem and react accordingly.
Zones of regulation help students acknowledge their feelings of anger, happiness, calmness, and sadness and how to go from one zone to another. (Slide below courtesy of Kristina Hohmann)
