Most people are satisfied with the amount of larp

The proportion of those satisfied is about the same, but there's now people feeling there is too much larp.

4 of 15

Comments on the amount of larp

  • “There's plenty of big events, but fewer smaller, lower pressure, more new larper friendly ones. Service and Contagion with their modern settings are friendly to new larpers, and ReLoaded is a nice smaller, lower pressure game.”
  • “Now that the campaigns are starting, I won't have time for all the theatreform. This is fine - for me right now the ideal situation. I think we're now reaching the point that we choose from a LARP menu, rather than just do everything, which is great.”
  • “I don't really have the time to go to a larp a month, but not every larp appeals, so it's fine.”

Fewer people want campaigns

We had a huge increase last year, and now it has dropped, presumably because of high-profile recent offerings

6 of 15

Things people said they wanted

  • Horror
  • Comedy
  • A day-format live-game post-Armageddon
  • Workshops on how to build a multi-use costume wardrobe and how to play a character effectively to get their things done
  • A short-format monthly campaign / small, low-costume accessible campaigns
  • Reruns: Gaslight, Justice & Nemesis, Property & Propriety.

“There's so much good stuff happening next year already”

There are barriers we could reduce

We can’t do much about people being busy. But can we do something to let people feel less anxious about larping, or let them feel like part of the larp community?

Barriers for GMs: Time, confidence, experience

The key barriers we can influence here are confidence and experience.

9 of 15

Most GMs are willing to mentor new GMs

“Other” responses were both along the lines of “when I have more experience”

Safety: Some people don’t feel safe

Last year we were all 1s and 2s on this scale.

No gender split due to low response rate.

11 of 15

Safety: Some people do not know how to respond

Again this is a decline on last year, when we were all 1s and 2s on this scale.

We’re regaining the tail we had eliminated.

12 of 15

Safety: Some people feel they cannot speak up

This is pretty much the same as last year.

What can we do to enable safety / welfare issues to be addressed promptly?

Feedback on safety

  • At some events, people were not briefed on what to do about safety issues.
  • There are angry, shouty men who are unfun to game with.
  • We need to improve combat safety briefings at boffer larps.
  • The culture is moving in the right direction.
  • One person felt we had too much emphasis on emotional safety, and that this “po-faced” attitude was costing fun and recruitment.

If there’s anything you think we can do to improve things in this area, please speak up. You can contact GMs, wellington@nzlarps.org, concerns@nzlarps.org, or the “LarpSafe” / safe space Facebook group.

We do not have a drinking problem

(No graph here, because it is boring)

We asked people this year “have you observed alcohol-related problems at any larp in the Wellington region in the past year?”

The response was 100% negative.

NZLARPS Membership

  • 19 of 20 said they were members of NZLARPS.
  • All 7 respondents who provided contact information were correct about their membership status, so reliable.
  • There are 48 NZLARPS members in the Wellington region, so this gives some idea of overall response rate.
  • If you would like to (re)join, you can give cash to Mel at the AGM. If you’re reading this online, fill out the form here, and the secretary will be in touch:
