  • To understand the battle, we need to begin with acknowledging that we are in a war.
  • According to wikipedia.org, war is defined as “an organized and often prolonged armed conflict…. war should be understood as an actual, intentional and widespread armed conflict… The set of techniques used by a group to carry out war is known as warfare”.
  • We are in what is considered an asymmetric warfare classified “as a conflict between two populations of drastically different levels of military capability or size. Asymmetric conflicts often result in guerilla tactics being used to overcome the sometimes vast gaps in technology and force size.” (Keep this point in mind for later)

  • Battles make up smaller components of the bigger picture. By definition, battles involve combat between two persons, between factions, between armies and they consist of any type of "extended contest, struggle, or controversy" (Webster-Merriam).
  • In warfare, battles are fought on different fronts, for different reasons, and with varying degrees of intensity. As Christians, we are in a spiritual battle of some sort on a daily basis. Our spiritual battles are real, even though we cannot physically see the attacker. But, we can educate ourselves on how the battles are fought and how they impact our lives on a daily basis.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

1 Peter 5:8

  • Lucifer was an angel, referred to as anointed cherub made with every precious stone and was built as an instrument (Eze. 28: 12-14).
  • He was cast from heaven due to self pride (Isa 14: 12-14), and after such referred to as the devil, Satan, the adversary, the beast.
    • The prince of this world (Jn. 12:30; Eph. 2:2)
    • Father of lies and behind every evil work (Jn. 8:44)
    • Giver of diseases (Job 2:7)

The Kingdom Battle (Eph. 6:12)

    • Fight for the souls of men
    • Fight between good and evil
    • Fight for eternity in Him

The Inward (Soul/Mind) Battle (Rom. 7:23)

    • Fight against the lust of the eyes
    • Fight against the lust of the flesh
    • Fight against the pride of life

For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.

Isaiah 9:5

12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Ephesians 6:12

It is important to remember that we are in an asymmetrical battle which means that we have the upper hand because we are on the winning side. Because of this, the enemy uses guerilla tactics (e.g. ambush, sabotage, raids, petty warfare in an attempt to catch us off guard and try to destroy us.

  • To accomplish His will and to advance His kingdom agenda on earth (Matt 6:10; John 3:16)
  • To maintain our rightful place as a God’s chosen people (1 Pet. 2:9-11)
  • For eternal glory (1 Tim. 6:12)
  • Jesus expects it (2 Tim. 2:2-3)
  • Because He fought for us (Jn. 16:33)

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;

2 Cor. 10:4

  • Confess the Word of God (Rom. 10:8)
  • Praise and Worship (Acts 16:25)
  • Praying & Fasting (Mat. 21:22,17:21)
  • Showing the Fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23)
  • Testifying (Rev. 12:11)
  • Obedience (2 Cor. 10:5)

  • There is a battle going on in the spiritual realm whether you want to fight it or not. When you accepted salvation, you were drafted into God’s army. Put your war clothes on!
  • As with any battle, expect you might get wounded, experience casualties and loss, and sometimes defeat; but, remember we are on the Lord’s side, we know in the end, we’re going to win!
  • The most dangerous soldier is one who is well equipped, understands the God-given authority with which s/he is endowed, and exercises it with confidence, tenacity, and courage!
  • It is ultimately our choice to be victims or victors. Jesus believes we can be the victors!

  • Act: Examine your life and find an area where the enemy attacks you. Determine the weapons best suited for the fight and use it this week.

Memorize: 2 Cor. 10:3-4

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

  • Prepare: Your questions for next week
