What is beauty?

Symmetry

One of the most appealing thing to me is the symmetry shown in the buildings which makes a pleasing effect for the eyes. It also creates some kind of equilibrium between the two sites and is also gives it a neat composition of the picture.

In both pictures can be seen the leading lines which are also created by the symmetry and hence, captures the audience to further discover the picture

MATHEMATICAL PATTERNS

Another key quality that I find personally alluring is the mathematical concept in the artwork. Olafur Eliasson tries to achieve this goal by designing several patterns which are then connected and make sometimes an abstract piece. Moreover, this can show us the organisation of the picture with several shapes. The added colours to the piece can result in having more powerful outcome of the project

Details and complexity

The Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia

This renowned cathedral in Barcelona is a perfect example of where the details and complexity dominate the picture. For the audience it can mean an endless looking at the picture and discover all the time something new.

Tree tower, Tokyo

Another type of architecture that I admire is the green one where there are also several details and accuracy incorporated into the project. The Tree Tower in Tokyo illustrates the sheer beauty in having in the middle of a normal skyscraper a twisted detailed building with the theme of nature.

In this project 2 my intention is to produce a piece with full of details and using various media to present it. This time I will try to focus on building more from kappa and other artificial materials. Moreover, I will try to apply a broader spectrum of colours into this project which connects to the theme of beauty. The aesthetics of colours is often one of the most important quality in the piece as it can be one of the things that captures immediately the audience. The symmetry and patterns are on the other hand another essential property which can evoke in the audience to further examine the artwork and classify it as beautiful. Last but not least, the complexity is also the

key concept that involves lots of patience and organisation of the work. However, it shows the great variety of different ideas of the artist which can capture more efficiently the audience Hence, this project will be also a mixture and exploration of different techniques which will all lead to the theme of beauty.

Hexagonal pattern

In this sketch can be visible a certain pattern on the walls of the building. This creates a sense of organisation and order when seen the building from a distance. The layers also gradually escalate which makes the texture even more interesting and rough. In each of the hexagon can be found a balcony which would be quite difficult

to build in real life. However, the hexagons could be created either by using kappa or using a plastic grid for fruit. In either way it will require lots of patience and precision. The texture would be also more alluring on the other hand.

Aesthetic colours with patterns

These two pictures represent the usage of aesthetic colours which are arranged to a certain pattern. The picture on the left shows some triangular windows filled with colourful windows which make the building alluring and interesting. The picture on the right, which represents the Malaga’s Pompidou building, shows another visible form

of pattern. The structure is built up of squares from which some of them are filled with transparent colourful glass. Both of these structures can be built

from wooden sticks that will be connected with glue gun. For the windows can be used some transparent colourful paper. The next step can be also to put lights into the building which could be then visible through the transparent windows and shade more the lights.

  • Free moving guiding lines are engulfing the whole structure
  • Almost like a grid pattern
  • Could be built from plastic grid
  • Show of movement of the inclined building
  • Smooth texture from a distance

Symmetry

These four pictures inspired me by Olafur Eliasson style which focuses on geometrical patterns. These four objects are transparent and have the aesthetic colours. The construction of such objects would require lots of patience, however, the final product might add the piece the bonus marks. These objects can be built by using the sticks and the transparent paper.

Regular shapes

This observational drawing can be an example of a perfect symmetry in the buildings. It shows a structure built on a small lake which creates a tranquil and peaceful environment. The texture is quite rough as there are pointed tops of the roof. It can be also described as being complex as there are plenty of details seen on the structure. The shading makes a great contrast so that the people can recognise more the structure from a distance.

For this experimentation I decided to explore and create some of the shapes in the form of a polygon. I designed a hexagonal-like shape built from the wood sticks which I then connected with a glue gun. It was however quite arduous to make the sticks attach to each other perfectly. Hence, next time

It would be better to build the structure from thicker sticks and try to have even more sided polygon. On the other hand, the overall structure of the shape is somewhat firm, although there is a limit of accuracy at some parts. In order to make

The structure more alluring I decided to use more aesthetic colours. There is a mixture of yellow, green, red and blue and all of them are transparent. For the next time I shall construct more complex structure with the sticks just like Olafur Eliasson did and include it in my final piece.

In terms of the nature I tried to include some more nature like materials such as this green sponge which can represent a bush or tree. The wooden sticks can represent

the trunk of a tree which will be coloured brown. Using the technique of Impasto I can achieve a more realistic texture of a grass. This will require lots of shades of the green colour, however, the final layer will make the lawn look like in a real life. The usage of other colours such as yellow or red may add the texture further details and represent flowers.

Creating nature from various techniques and materials

Designing the colourful walls with some light

In this type of experimentation I used several media to design a modern wall with interesting facade. The usage of the colourful transparent paper shows the complementary colours which can increase

the tone of the structure. Moreover, there is no strict pattern of the windows carved, hence, there is a certain theme of freedom involved. The scale of them is however small which on the other hand puts more emphasis on the details. The lights in the second image depict that the colours of the windows become even intense. There is also a bigger contrast between the black walls and the colorful windows, thus, it might be somewhat expressive. This also

Supports the idea of multimedia and can be quite valuable in the final piece of artwork. Perhaps these walls can be used or a building such as gallery where the artworks can put on emphasis on expressiveness. It might create a pleasing perception of the piece from the different perspectives of the final piece. It is worth mentioning that this building might as well be multifunctional with different purposes for various events.

Various media involved can make the piece more expressive and complex

The pattern can show the harmony between each part of the object.

Influence of the two artists

Olafur Eliasson

Perhaps one of the biggest influential artist on my work was Olafur Eliasson which puts emphasis on the geometric objects. My geometric object in the centre shows the similar structure to Eliasson one as can be seen in the picture. Moreover, there are complementary colours involved which increase the tone of the image. Both of these structures have in common the abstract meaning of them which is predominantly used for decoration and detail.

The media I used for this object were the wooden sticks and the transparent coloured paper. The mass of the both objects seems to be quite dominant which puts emphasis on the visual intensity. Furthermore, there is some kind of unity which creates the balance between all of the media in these three-dimensional objects.

Another form of influence were the complementary colours as mentioned before which evoke the audience in the sense of abstractive and simultaneously expressive style of visual arts. My piece circle of the colourful

walls serve as an experience for the people who visit the gallery. Both of these images may also connect to the theme of beauty because of the variety the artist uses in the piece of artwork. The texture of these colourful walls is smooth which might be a pleasing element for the visitors.

Bahadir Kul Architects (BKA)

My biggest influence of the whole structure comes from the BK Architects which designed colourful ice-rink in Turkey. The usage of the aesthetic and complementary colours creates the sense of beauty to me as there is a variety involved in the art piece. My building serves as a gallery and can be classified as multifunctional building, hence, the range of the coloured windows might help to establish a good light for modern arts. The installation of the lights even more creates a better mood of the structure just like the ice-

-rink structure by BKA. The shapes of the windows are not prickly, but rather smoothly-edged triangles. Therefore, these shapes might be also described as organic with no real pattern. In my building this can also evoke in contrast between the regular objects inspired by Olafur Eliasson and the main building. Furthermore, I made a usage of the primary colours in the structure from which other shades can be formed like can be seen in the ice-rink image. I also tried to incorporate some green architecture which is quite the opposite of the BKA’s structure.

In terms of the perspective from the back, the wall has quite a fixed pattern. It is made with a plastic grid which again creates some hexagonal pattern. The BKA’s building has also the white columns involved in their piece, however, they do not have a certain form. The similarity is on the other hand in the thickness of the white walls even though my structure is built into a smaller scale.

Evidence of the steps

Planning

Creating the walls

The first stage was to make a plan of where the main building (gallery) and other key parts will be placed. There were done some calculations such as measuring the interiors angles of the 14 sided polygon. The plan was also coloured in order to recognise easily the things which are sketched from bird's perspective. This stage required lots of

patience and precision. For the next time there could be done even more calculations for example for the path to be more accurate. However, in the picture on the left

can be seen some more precise calculations of the 14 sided polygon. Moreover, these measurements helped me to orientate more in the project and form certain patterns which connect to the theme of beauty.

The next step was to create walls of the gallery. The front walls facing the polygonal shape are made from kappa and the back is made of three layers of cardboard. For the front walls it was quite difficult to cut out the triangular windows. I discovered that the slower I cut it out, the more accurate it was. Additionally, I am glad with the usage of colourful transparent paper as windows as it makes the colours aesthetically pleasing. Through these windows can be

also seen the lights once installed into the building. For the back wall, It was somewhat difficult to stick properly the white grid onto the walls. Furthermore, it was also arduous to bend the cardboard with the grid and also with the foil from the other end of the wall as it did not stick properly. The glue gun was the best solution for that but for next time I shall put the foil or the grid between the layers of cardboard so that it is firm there.

Constructing and colouring

The third step was to construct the main building and colour the surroundings such as the lawn, the walls or the centre. I also added the carpet like surface for the path and for the roof of the building. This creates a more interesting texture and makes the piece more realistic. Moreover, I used the technique of impasto in order to create a perfect lawn. This required using the acrylic colours in great proportion as well as various shades of one colour.

Adding the details

In this phase I was adding the final details to the piece, which are essential for the final product. It shows the complexity of the structure with the details. One of the hardest thing was to connect the trees or the transparent paper to the surface as there was too much glue left on the piece. Hence, for next time I shall use a different glue with smaller proportion. Also the construction of geometric object into the centre was quite arduous as the wooden sticks did not stick properly. However, there is a balance of the colours used in it and creates a structured motif.

Final steps

The final step was to do the installation of the lights into the structure which was also a quite challenging stage. The lights should be next time be directly installed into the structure which would facilitate the process. However, overall the lights are quite intense but simultaneously pleasing for the eyes due to the aesthetic colours. This structure could certainly be multifunctional and there is a strong emphasis on the details. There is also a symmetry that shows a certain shape.
