NATIONAL AND NATURE PARKS OF ROMANIA

Since the beginning of nature conservation initiatives, Romanian foresters have been actively and directly involved in this field. Constantly supported by specialists from other fields, foresters have acted consistently to protect, complete and ensure the sustainability of the “Romanian forest”(Giurgiu, 1993).

The first protected area in Romania was established in 1994 - Codrul Secular Slatioara Natural Reserve. The first national park, Retezat National Park, was established in 1935.

There are 29 national parks designated at national level, 22 of them being managed by the National Forest administration:

-12 are national parks (with an area of 308 000 ha)

-10 are nature parks (with an area of 544 000 ha).
