In Social Studies this week, we will begin Week 5 in our Studies Weekly newspaper. This newspaper will guide us through the conflicts and compromises made in North America in the years prior to the American Revolution. We will have a practice OPEN NOTES quiz over this week on Friday. We will walk through expectations and how to take an open notes quiz together.

Please be sure to review your child’s notes each night. It can take only a few minutes, but can do great things in reminding them of what they learned that day. Allow them to teach YOU what they learned too!

GRAMMAR & WRITING:

This week, we will focus on the grammar skill of writing a complete sentence. We will discuss subjects and predicates, and fragments and complete sentences. We will have a short quiz at the end of the week!

READING:

In Reading, we have started the year with a novel study, reading the story The Tale of Despereaux. Throughout this novel, we will be focusing on all reading skills that students will learn this year, such as character development, cause and effect, inferencing, theme, and so much more. We will have quiz over the first section of the book on Tuesday, August 12th. The slideshow of vocabulary words and characters is posted in Google Classroom.

We will also begin Module 1 this week, as the first story is written by the same author as The Tale of Despereaux: Kate DiCamillo. We will not quiz over this story, but will discuss similarities and differences in the character development.

  • How does light travel through TRANSPARENT materials?
  • How does light travel through TRANSLUCENT materials?
  • How does light travel through OPAQUE materials?

Depending on our week and how much we are able to cover, students may complete a graded open notes task over this on Friday, August 15.

This week in math students will:

  • Learn more about PLACE VALUE

  • Comparing VALUES OF DIGITS

  • Writing numbers in DIFFERENT FORMS

Skill #1 Place Value

Students continue to learn about PLACE VALUE. We will look at large whole numbers and identify the:

  • PLACE of the identified digit…

*For example tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, millions, etc.…

  • VALUE of the identified digit…

*For example 3 in the hundred thousands has a value of 300,000

  • What is a DIGIT? A number 0-9

In the number 456,123 what DIGIT is in the ten thousands place? 5

In the number 456,123 what is the VALUE of the underlined digit? 400,000

Skill # 2 Comparing the Values of Digits

Students will work to COMPARE THE VALUES of digits in a whole number. For example, lets compare both the values of the 2’s and the 5’s….see below

The value of the 2 in the MILLIONS place is 10 times more than the value of the 2 in the HUNDRED THOUSANDS place.

The value of the 2 in the HUNDRED THOUSANDS place is 10 times less than the value of the 2 in the MILLIONS place.

The value of the 5 in the HUNDREDS place is 10 times more than the value of the 5 in the TENS place.

The value of the 5 in the TENS place is 10 times less than the value of the 5 in the HUNDREDS place.

1 hop to the right/left = 10 times more/less

2 hops to the right/left = 100 times more/less

3 hops to the right/left = 1,000 times more/less

4 hops to the right/left = 10,000 times more/less

Skill #3

Students will use their knowledge of place value to write multi-digit whole numbers in different forms:

STANDARD FORM: 628,349

EXPANDED FORM: 600,000 + 20,000 + 8,000 + 300 + 40 + 9

WRITTEN FORM: six hundred twenty-eight thousand, three hundred forty nine
