Library visit

Second and 7 Foundation is a program created by former Ohio State athletes. They send current student-athletes to visit classrooms in the city to talk about the importance of reading/education. They read aloud a story to students and each student receives a book..

Our local libraries frequently run programing for students during the daytime. Usually som sort of read aloud, readers theather by an acting troupe, and sometimes they have author visits. Here students are meeting the author of the Pete the Cat books!

Scavenger Hunt

My school has a library in walking distance so we were able to visit frequently during this module. A scanvenger hunt is a fun way for students to get acclimated with the librarians and how/where to find books. You could also do a scanvenger hunt in your school/class library. There are several options on TPT that are FREE to choose from for a scavenger hunt.

Observation

My students were very interested in studying different forms of extreme weather in particular, tornadoes.

Students observed images of extreme weather, took notes of it, and formed an inquiry question. This question lead us to study the effects and formation of tornadoes.,

Research

Using the jigsaw strategy, students worked with their “expert” group and did research on the computer, through articles, videos and books (these were all child friendly). They reported their findings to their “home” group.

Experiment

We experiemented with the different ways to “simulate” a tornadoe. Students determined these weren’t the best way to simulate the formation of a tornadoe because of the variables to cause a tornadoe to happen were missing. They concluded with these models that they best simulate what a tornadoe looks like (funnel shaped cone).

Not pictured we also used the 2-liter bottle mehtod.

Simulation

I found this Tornado in a Box simulation many years ago on Pinterest and was finally able to try it out. You can find directions with the link below. I am very disappointed I didnt get many pictures of this process because you just get so caught up in whats happening.
