WHAT ARE HIGH SCHOOL CREDITS?

  • You will earn credit for every course that you take during high school
  • At LCHS, you will earn .5 credit each semester
    • Grades (report cards) are given every 9 weeks. Each 9 weeks is half of your semester average.
  • You can earn .5 credit for one semester, and not .5 credit for the next semester
  • You NEED the FULL CREDIT
  • If you fail a semester, then you will need to make that up in order to meet graduation requirements.

PROMOTION REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have 5 credits after first year to be a sophomore
  • Must have 11 credits after second year to be a junior
  • Must have 17 credits after third year to be a senior
  • Must have 23 credits to graduate

ENGLISH

  • Four years (or credits) of English are required
    • 9th Lit
    • 10th Lit
    • 11th Lit (Must be American Lit)
    • 12th Lit

    • Dual enrollment literature can substitute

MATH

  • Four years (credits) of Math are required
    • Algebra I
    • Geometry
    • Algebra II
    • 4th math – there are several options
      • PreCalculus
      • Adv. Math Decision Making
      • Math of Finance
      • Dual enrollment

SCIENCE

  • Four years (or credits) of Science are required
    • Biology
    • Physical Science or Physics
    • Environmental Science or Chemistry
    • 4th Science – there are many choices
      • Some examples: Forensic Science, Animal Science, Plant Science, etc.
      • Be careful to choose courses that meet four year college admissions requirements if that’s your plan

SOCIAL STUDIES

  • Three credits of Social Studies are required
    • ½ credit of Citizenship
    • ½ credit of Economics
    • World History
    • US History

  • Also required
    • ½ credit of Health
    • ½ credit of Personal Fitness
      • 3 years of NJROTC will satisfy this requirement

ELECTIVES

  • 7 credits of Electives are required
    • 3 credits must come from Fine Arts, OR Foreign Language, OR CTAE
      • Fine Arts examples: Band, Chorus, Drama, Art
      • CTAE examples: Construction, Healthcare, Marketing, etc.
      • Foreign Language: Spanish

Any combination of these will meet this requirement

    • 4 additional credits can come from any area

SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER…

  • Students who wish to attend a University of Georgia Institution need to complete 2 years of the same foreign language

  • Students who are not planning to attend college, or who plan to attend a Technical college may benefit from pursuing a pathway

WHAT’S A GPA AND WHO CARES?

A = 4.0 (90-100) B = 3.0 (80-89)

C = 2.0 (70-79) F = 0 (0-69)

  • Types of GPA - Cumulative (un-weighted), Academic (weighted), HOPE
  • Determines class rank (Academic)
  • Determines eligibility for HOPE Scholarship
  • LCHS adds .5 point for Honors/Dual Enrollment and 1.0 point for AP (HOPE does not weight the same)

  • What do colleges look at?

  • Transcript will be updated every semester of high school

REMEMBER…..

  • If you fail a course, it will have to be repeated
  • Failing grades STAY on your transcript
  • Higher grades make your GPA better…… so STUDY and be at school EVERY DAY

HOPE SCHOLARSHIP

  • For students who are Georgia residents who are graduating from a Georgia high school and attending a Georgia college
  • Pays a percentage of tuition at colleges in Georgia
  • Percentages change every year

Zell Miller - pays 100% if you meet GPA/testing requirements

HOPE Grant - for use at technical colleges

HOW DO I QUALIFY FOR THE HOPE SCHOLARSHIP???

  • Must have a 3.0 gpa in academic classes
  • HOPE determines your gpa
  • Your high school does not determine your HOPE gpa
  • New Rigor Requirements – 4 rigor courses
    • Does not have to be AP/Honors courses

BEING SUCCESSFUL IN HIGH SCHOOL

  • Come to school regularly
    • Attendance affects credit in high school
  • Be in class on time
  • Be prepared – have your materials
  • Pay attention in class
  • Complete your assignments
  • Find out what you missed when absent – make up work timely
  • Review and Preview Notes
  • Attend tutoring
  • Communicate with your teacher
  • Study nightly
  • Keep a calendar
  • Stay organized - use your planner

WHAT NOT TO DO IN HIGH SCHOOL

  • Miss school
    • Turn notes in to the front office within 3 days when absent!!
    • Attendance policy – missing more than 10 days means you will not earn credit in that class
  • Expect teachers or parents/guardians to be responsible for your work
  • Earn zeroes – they will kill your average very quickly

  • Treating someone how you and they would want to be treated
  • Caring about the thoughts, beliefs, and rights of someone else

Thank you for your thoughts and ideas of ways we can show respect. Treating yourself and others with respect is very important at the 9th grade campus and this is how we want to see you behave.
