What is the Access Assessment for English Language Learners?

  • Access for ELL’s is a tool to measure English Language Learners (ELLs) proficiency in the English language. Students are assessed in four domains: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing.
    • Scoring Levels 1-6
      • (Entering, Beginning, Developing, Expanding, Bridging, and Reaching)

    • This assessment does not measure students’ academic achievement or content knowledge

Moving Forward:

  • Access information is used to make decisions about students’ English academic language to facilitate their language development.

  • Use the WIDA “Can Do” philosophy to provide ML students with the ability to take responsibility for their own learning.
  • Increase number of staff who are receiving training in SIOP (sheltered language instruction)

  • Scores are used to decipher which learning strategies should be used to support students, make decisions about students’ English academic language and move them to the next level
    • Scores are also used to make decisions about whether a student can exit English language support services
    • Use data to support decisions about placement and instructional planning
