CHAPTER 1: NEHEMIAH’S PRAYER

  • Nehemiah a Jewish man loving in Susa, questions on of his brothers who is returning from Israel about the condition of the Jews. His brother replies the walls of the city are destroyed.
  • Nehemiah then prays to the Lord confessing, and asking for success.

CHAPTER 2: NEHEMIAH TRAVELS TO ISRAEL

  • Nehemiah goes to the King Artaxerxes and asks the King if he can return to Israel, and he receives permission.
  • Nehemiah then asks the King if he can be provided with supplies when he arrives in Israel, and the King grants his request.
  • Nehemiah returns to Israel with the Persian army.
  • Nehemiah surveys the walls
  • The Israelites start rebuilding.

CHAPTER 3: BUILDING THE WALL

  • The wall and its gates are repaired.

CHAPTER 4: SAMARIAN OPPOSITION

  • The Samarians oppose building the wall, When they hear it is almost finished they form an army with the Ammonites and declare was on Israel.
  • The Israelites then create an army to provide security for the people working.

CHAPTER 5: NEHEMIAH HELPS THE POOR

  • The Jewish people who were in poverty cried out in protest against bankers who were lending them money to survive.
  • Nehemiah rebuked the bakers telling them to stop lending money at interest, and give back what they had seized.

CHAPTER 6: NEHEMIAH THREATENED

  • When the enemies of the Jews heard the wall was complete they schemed against Nehemiah and attempted to lead him into a trap.
  • They sent letters to Nehemiah in order to set up a meeting where they could harm him, but Nehemiah declined.
  • Nehemiah was also tempted into hiding in the Temple from his enemies by a man named Shemaiah, but he refused because it would be sinful.

CHAPTER 7: EXILES RETURN

  • Nehemiah appoints ruler over Jerusalem.
  • Exiles return from Babylon with offerings.

CHAPTER 8: EZRA READS THE BOOK OF LAW

  • Ezra reads the book of law to the Israelites.
  • The Israelites have a feast.
  • The Israelites collect branches to build booths to live in for the feast.

  • The Israelites gather and confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors..

CHAPTER 10: THE AGREEMENT

  • The Israelites gather and make an agreement to follow the Law of God, not intermarry with other nations and make offerings to the Lord.

CHAPTER 11: NEW RESIDENTS OF JERUSALEM

  • A lottery was created to choose who lived in Jerusalem. One of every ten Israelites were chosen to live in Jerusalem.

CHAPTER 12: DEDICATION OF THE WALL

  • The Israelites sing songs to dedicate the wall.

CHAPTER 13: NEHEMIAH’S FINAL REFORMS

  • While Nehemiah is gone visiting the King of Persia, Eliashib uses a storehouse that is meant for tithes to house Tobiah. When Nehemiah gets back he throws Tobiah out.
  • Nehemiah also finds out tithes have not being paid and rebukes the priests, and enforces tithe payment.
  • Nehemiah also rebukes Jews who are working on sabbath day.
  • Nehemiah also rebukes Jews who are intermarrying with women from other nations.
