Meeting # 1 Outcomes

• Overview on why the change in nickname and mascot.
• Review the transition process and timeline.
• Define the characteristics of the Sidney CSD.
• Finalize survey #1 for distribution for Thursday, September 28th.

• There were about 60 NYS public school districts that referenced Indigenous People names and/or mascots.
• During the 2022-2023 school year, NYSED developed a Mascot Advisory Group to review all documents and individual public school situations.
• In April 2023, NYSED confirmed that Sidney CSD must change their nickname from the “Warriors” due to the historical reference to Indigenous People.

NYSED Timeline for Nickname and Mascot Transition & Implementation

• April 2023-NYSED confirms that Sidney CSD must change their nickname
• Board of education adopted the nickname/mascot transition plan June 2023
• July 1 - Warrior nickname began to be phased out - as a district we are committed to not using it publically
• Implementing the plan during the 2023-2024 school year
• Removal of all Indigenous People insignia throughout the district by June 2025.

Sidney CSD to keep the following:

• Maintain school colors (Maroon, White, Gray)
• Maintain formal Sidney CSD logo
• Maintain the Sidney CSD block “S” logo

Transition & Implementation

• September 2023 - Stakeholder Groups created for the process
• September/October 2023 - Survey created & shared to gather suggestions for nickname
• October 2023 - All submissions reviewed by stakeholder committees
• November 2023 -Top choices shared with K-12 students for final voting
• November 14, 2023 - Official announcement of nickname made at the board of education meeting

• Identify characteristics that describe us as a school community
• Provide feedback on the initial survey - revisions, clarifications, additions, etc.
• Finalize survey #1 for distribution Thursday, September 28th - Tuesday, October 10

Review All Submissions

• Considerations - trademarked, state education allowable, school appropriate
• Best representing the district and ones that don’t represent the district

Finalize Survey #2

• Distribution Thursday, October 19 - Tuesday, October 31
• Survey #2 is distributed at-large. This survey will identify the top 3 selections

Sidney CSD nickname revealed at the Tuesday, November 14 board of education meeting by representatives from the student stakeholder committee.

Sidney CSD will implement a similar process to identify the new mascot to align with the nickname.
