You should consider the IB Diploma Programme if…

You are bilingual. This is a huge advantage because you can use your skills in a language other than English to score highly on a IB World Language exam and that will get you closer to the IB Diploma. If you want to become bilingual, the IB Diploma also requires you take a language.

You are hoping to save money on college. IB can help you earn college credits through your IB coursework/exams.

You want to be a competitive college applicant. IB is highly regarded by universities admissions teams. Additionally, the IB diploma program is the most rigorous pathway offered at NHS and the rigor of your schedule is a huge factor in college admissions.

You want to grow as a student. IB offers challenging, college level courses that will help walk in to college-ready on day one.

You will be first generation college student. IB at NHS is a highly inclusive program where students of all backgrounds are welcomed and encouraged to share their unique perspectives with their peers.

You love travel + learning about other cultures. You’ll develop your world language skills, learn about global issues, be challenged to understand other cultures, and learn more about why you think the way you do.

Words from our Northfield Alumni

Junior @ Villanova:

(Full Academic Scholarship)

Because of IB [at NHS] I know how to learn new things. It taught me how to ask for help, how to think so that I can retain information, and how to struggle through new concepts.”

Junior @ CU Boulder:

I am currently taking 17 credit hours so it is a tough course load however, I feel very well prepared. I have a good set of note taking skills. I also think I have a good sense of time management definitely all thanks to IB!”

Sophomore @ University of Oklahoma:

“IB did way more prep stuff than I would have thought.”

Pre-Med Student @ CU Boulder:

I got 29 credit hours in total, because the max that you can get from Boulder for IB is 24 credits and I got 5 credit hours for AP Human Geography. Since you do about 30 credit hours per year, I’m basically a year ahead.”

Freshman @ Princeton University:

“If I’m being 110% honest, it’s because of IB that I could write essays that got me into college.

Freshman @ The University of Arizona:

“I got a $20,000 scholarship when the U of A received my IB diploma. I didn’t have to apply for the scholarship I just got it for earning the IB diploma. $5,000 each year for four years.”

What do colleges think of the IB Diploma?

  • “Success in an IB program correlates well with success at Harvard. We are always pleased to see the credentials of the IB Diploma Program on the transcript.” GPA is not nearly as important a factor in university admission as the IB Diploma. If a student has to choose, choose the Diploma over protecting the GPA.”

-Harvard University, Marilyn McGrath Lewis, Asst. Dean of Admissions

  • "One of the advantages of an IB curriculum is its structure and quality. It is a coordinated program, well established, well known and well respected. We know the quality of IB courses, and we think the IB curriculum is terrific."

-Duke University, Christoph Guttentag, Director of Undergrad. Admissions

  • “I don’t think there is anyone [in college admissions] who does not respect the I.B.”

-Brown University, Panetha Ott, Admissions Officer

  • “We definitely take note of the IB Diploma in the admissions process at Michigan! Feel free to quote me on that!”

-University of Michigan , Joseph Gore, Admissions Counselor

Levels: SL vs. HL

Standard Level

Higher Level

  • Fewer teaching hours required (150)
    • 1 OR 2 years
  • Less depth & breadth
  • For areas that are less of a strength.
  • More teaching hours required (240)
    • 2 years
  • More depth & breadth
  • Pick according to your strengths!

One year SL IB classes are often HARDER than two year classes because the teacher need to fit all of the content into one year. We have worked strategically to make the one year classes do-able, but do not assume that a shorter class is easier - it isn’t!
