What are the benefits of learning a second language learning a second language?

Learning a second language provides a focus on literacy development which allows the learner to make meaning of what they hear, read and see in the world around them.

When learning a second language one develops strategies and skills for language learning which facilitates the learning of additional languages.

When learning another language one develops an understanding of the culture that's associated with that language. This helps to create cultural appreciation and flexibility of mind as well as global citizenship.

Having a second language can increase one’s employment opportunities. Many employers and government departments consider being bilingual to be an asset. It can also be a benefit when students are seeking part-time or summer employment.

Learning a second language provides opportunities for personal development that can enhance communication and problem-solving skills such as asking for directions, assistance or ordering food in a French speaking community.

There is no requirement to complete ICF as a prerequisite for the Late French Immersion program. Students who have completed the Core French program or the ICF program are eligible to register for Late French Immersion in Grade 7.

ICF is an optional program that may be offered when registration warrants and grade level resources are able to support
Viability of the program is determined after the registration period

Possible scenarios:

The class cap is 28
Where registration numbers exceed 28, a waitlist will be created
In cases where all students register for ICF, there�will be full implementation
When registration numbers are low, the ICF

program may not be viable

Registration Process

The registration process for ICF will be done via Google Form. Students will be accepted into the program by order of registration (first come first served). ICF Registration will be done online at the NLSchools website and will open on February 25, 2025 at 9:00 AM (NST) and close on February 28, 2025 at 11:59 PM (NST). If you require assistance with the digital registration process, please contact your child’s school for assistance.
