  • One of the biggest differences is the ability to draw/write/annotate on Jamboard Frames
  • Jamboard also has easy to use sticky notes that make discussing a topic super easy. Grab a sticky type on it and it appears on your frame
  • Google [Slides] appear on your left & Jamboard [Frames] can be seen across the top
  • Jamboard: no version history BUT, it’s in active development and coming SOON! yay!

A little background to our virtual learning journey:

  • In my district, we wanted to keep the digital tools used during remote learning somewhat minimal and consistent.
  • In the beginning of the year we had virtual PD highlighting the digital tools we’d be primarily utilizing for our online learning, and one we added was Jamboard. S/O to my district T & L Department, coaches, specialists, teachers, librarians and of course students and families. It truly is a team effort.
  • Jamboard has been so great for collaboration, interacting, discussions, problem solving… so much!

BREAKOUT ROOM TIPS

ROLES: assign roles, group leader, students prefer teachers assign roles, clarify what the roles mean, ice breaker to assign role (student with birthday closes to the current date)

GROUPING: ideal size is 2-5 students, make sure the number of small groups is manageable, keep groups for extended period of time, when groups are first formed give them some ice-breakers.

THE TASKS: have groups return with some sort of response/product to share with the larger class, most frequently mentioned is to have students work on a collaborate project -- like jamboard!

MONITORING: creates a single jamboard and assigns a different frames to each group for recording group work.

HOW HAS JAMBOARD BEEN A HERO DURING REMOTE/VIRTUAL LEARNING

  • BREAKOUT ROOMS: teacher creates one Jamboard file, assigns students to one frame, teacher can monitor progress while not being able to be in the the same place at once.
  • CLASSROOM COMMUNITY: the ease of collaborating, ability for everyone to contribute in class
  • SCREEN SHARE: whiteboard writing/drawing capability (esp for those who can’t use built in feature)

WAYS TO USE JAMBOARD

SYNCHRONOUS

  • Teacher demonstrates (Zoom share iPad for easy writing/drawing)
  • All class collaborating on one Jamboard frame
  • Collaborate on one Jamboard, using several frames, group/pair students and designate then on frames

ASYNCHRONOUS

  • Create and/or share Jamboard lessons/templates via Google Classroom or Seesaw so students can work on independently and turn-in/share later.
  • Sketchnote

HOW TO SHARE JAMBOARDS...

Some ideas...

  • Click the blue Share button and add specific people and give editor access OR select “get link” and change the restriction access to “anyone with a link” and select “viewer” or “editor”
  • Add link to Zoom or Meet chat, Share link via Google Classroom or Seesaw, or share it in another tool or LMS

Things to consider when others have full editing access...

  • Anyone with access can move anyone else’s items, erase writing, etc -- even the teacher’s information :)
  • Great opportunity to embed digital citizenship
  • Teacher can change the access from Editor to Viewer at anytime
  • Teacher can also begin the lesson as View Only to demonstrate and then change access to Editor after

Unfortunately there is no version history in Jamboard -- YET.

Have heard thru the grapevine that VERSION HISTORY is in active development and should be out early 2021… :)

JAMBOARD TIPS!!

  • Keep a template version of what you’ll use

collaboratively with editor access

  • The first time you introduce Jamboard, give students “playtime with it so they can get their excitement out, can learn how it works, have a chat about usage expectations -- great time to embed some #DigCit conversations

MORE TIPS!!

  • When sharing the Jamboard link during live calls, wait until all participants enter the Zoom/Meet call before posting the link in the chat.
  • Remember you can always change the Share settings if needed and turn off editing.
  • When click Make a Copy from a force copy, be patient this take some time (if you keep clicking you’ll have several copies!)

LESSON ideas

  • MATH
    • Teachers can do mini lessons (or have students do a lesson) writing on the Jamboard as you would on a whiteboard in class
    • For collaboration…
      • Write problems on different frames and have students designated to a problem, teacher can observe live work, discuss
      • OR You have students create their own and have a frame for each day so they can show their work, then turn in their work via Google Classroom, etc.

Install the Equatio extension in Chrome. Write math problems in a Google Doc then copy and paste to Jam

Four Corners

Four corners is exactly what you think it is. Pose a question for students with 4 potential answers or responses. Allow students to move a sticky note or write their name in the spot they feel is correct. After that, be sure to discuss why you chose that spot (this is often the most right part of this strategy). This template works best if you complete the activity as a class.

Graffiti Wall

A Graffiti Wall is a phenomenal check in that is focused on art. Students collaborate on the wall to create a mural of thoughts of feelings. This in turn can instantly transfer into a study guide for all learners. This template works best if you complete their activity as a class.
