WHO SAID IT?

5

"You call it hope, that fire of fire!"

Edgar Allan Poe

Taylor Swift

1

2

From “Tamerlane”

I have no time to dote or dream:

You call it hope — that fire of fire!

It is but agony of desire:

If I can hope — Oh God! I can —

Its fount is holier — more divine —

I would not call thee fool, old man,

But such is not a gift of thine.

WHO SAID IT?

6

"And all I loved, I loved alone."

Edgar Allan Poe

Taylor Swift

1

2

From “Alone”

And all I lov’d—I lov’d alone—

Then—in my childhood—in the dawn

Of a most stormy life—was drawn

From ev’ry depth of good and ill

The mystery which binds me still—

WHO SAID IT?

7

"He looks up, grinning like a devil."

Edgar Allan Poe

Taylor Swift

1

2

From “Cruel Summer”

And I snuck in through the garden gate

Every night that summer just to seal my fate (Oh)

And I scream, "For whatever it's worth

I love you, ain't that the worst thing you ever heard?"

He looks up, grinning like a devil

WHO SAID IT?

8

"It was in the bleak December."

Edgar Allan Poe

Taylor Swift

1

2

From “The Raven”

“’Tis some visitor,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door—

Only this and nothing more.”

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December;

And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.

WHO SAID IT?

9

"All my flowers grew back as thorns."

Edgar Allan Poe

Taylor Swift

1

2

From “Call It What You Want”

All my flowers grew back as thorns

Windows boarded up after the storm

He built a fire just to keep me warm

All the drama queens taking swings

All the jokers dressing up as kings

10 of 30

WHO SAID IT?

10

"I wounded the good, and I trusted the wicked.”

Edgar Allan Poe

Taylor Swift

1

2

From “Daylight”

Luck of the draw only draws the unlucky

And so I became the butt of the joke

I wounded the good and I trusted the wicked

Clearing the air, I breathed in the smoke

WARM UP IN ACTION

WHAT IS IT?

  • A way to engage students in content with a culturally responsive approach (connecting content with topics that are meaningful to them)
  • Each student is responsible for responding to each question - hand up, moving to a corner in the room, writing on a whiteboard, etc.
  • Project from computer for easy visibility

COLLABORATION

  • ALL students are active in the activity
  • Students connect the content with a non-threatening experience, leaving a feeling of excitement and “awesome”
  • COLLABORATION: Level 1 (On my own)

WARM UP+ IN ACTION

HOW TO TECH+ THIS STRATEGY

POTENTIAL TECH TOOLS:

    • Plickers
      • Will provide real-time results
      • Students must have their individual QR code paper
      • Needs to be in-person for best results
      • Explanation video
    • Mentimeter
      • Will provide real-time results
      • Can be in-person or virtual

WRITE THE ROOM(+) IN ACTION

WHAT IS IT?

  • Separate students into partners or groups of 3.
  • Create a worksheet that has at least 2 more questions than the number of groups.
  • Create sheets with a question on the bottom and the answer to a different question on top.
  • Students will start at a question, answer it, and then find another sheet in the room that has the correct answer on top.
  • Students will then solve the problem on the bottom of the new sheet and continue the process.

WORKSHEET IN ACTION

WHAT IS IT?

  • Create a worksheet that has at least as many questions or problems where each student can be uniquely assigned one number to complete.
  • Each student is responsible for answering their question/problem correctly.
  • Students then need to individually meet with each student in the class to answer/solve another person’s question.

COLLABORATION

  • Students are actively working with ALL students in the class
  • Students are the expert on their question/problem, so they can coach others through how to answer
  • COLLABORATION: Scaffolded Levels 1-3

IN THE BAG(+)

Take essential questions and have ALL students give input on that question.

21

TEACHER RECOMMENDED

IN THE BAG IN ACTION

WHAT IS IT?

  • Write a question on a bag that you would like students to provide extended responses on. You will want at least 8 questions/bags.
  • Separate students into small groups.
  • On quarter sheets of paper, students write their answer, fold their paper, and place it in the bag.
  • Students rotate through all stations/questions/bags following the same procedure.
  • When they have completed all stations/questions/bags and are back where they started, they take out all answers and read them. They will consolidate the answers into one statement/solution to be shared with the whole class.

IN THE BAG IN ACTION

COLLABORATION

  • Students start out working individually, but must collaborate with their small group to create a final product.
  • Students are not responsible for being experts on everything all at once. They need everyone in the class to help them become an expert.
  • COLLABORATION: Scaffolded Levels 1-4

IN THE BAG+ IN ACTION

HOW TO TECH+ THIS STRATEGY

POTENTIAL TECH TOOLS:

  • Google Forms (Example) and Google Sheets (Example)
    • Create a Google Form with all of the questions. Make sure responses are linked to a Google Sheet.
    • Students answer the question digitally instead of placing a piece of paper in a bag.
    • Share a link with students to Google Sheet with all of the answers for their questions.
  • Google Slides (Example)
    • Create a Google Slides presentation with slides for each question. Share with students to edit.
    • Students work together to consolidate the answers and place a final answer on the Slide for their question.

COLLABORTION+ IN ACTION

WHAT IS IT?

  • This is where you get to share!
  • Take our individual IN-PERSON collaborative teaching and learning strategies and TECH+ them with suggestions and feedback from our peers.
  • The intent is to help you think outside of what you already do, share online tools, and step outside of your comfort zone.
  • Use a COLLABORATION+ strategy as a way to help us shift our thinking about the transition between in-person and virtual learning.
