Weekly Responsibilites

  • Attend all club meetings
  • Post a calendar of events to publicize meetings
  • Make morning announcements, posters, signs, and banners to promote projects and meetings
  • Document and photograph memorable service projects

Monthly Responsibilites

  • Attend club board meetings
  • Attend Kiwanis club meetings and provide updates on club happenings
  • Update the social media page, if the club has one
  • Send articles/photos to the District Editor
  • Produce a club newsletter

Additional Responsibilities

  • Train your successor
  • Create a scrapbook for your club that can be entered at DCON
  • Create club advertisements such as videos and flyers to promote your club
  • Make public-service announcements, contact local press, and send articles to community newspapers.

The Sunshine Source

All editors should be familiar with The Sunshine Source (TSS).

    • TSS is the official bi-monthly newsletter for the Florida District.
    • TSS is a good reference for your

newsletter–layout and content wise.

Using Newsletters

  • Improve club communication
  • Keep members interested
  • Advertise your own service projects, Division Council Meetings, and other division and/or district events (DCON, Spring Zone Rally, etc.)

Do…

  • DO include pictures from past events
  • DO adhere to Key Club graphic standards following the Key Club Brand Guide
  • DO include a message from your president
  • DO add information for future events

  • DO send out by email
  • DO create catchy title
  • DO include Key Club logos
  • DO send to all members, Faculty Advisor, Kiwanis Advisor, Lieutenant Governor, District Editor, and anyone else who requests a copy

Don’t…

  • Don’t make your newsletter excessively long.
  • Don’t leave it to the last minute to complete.
  • Don’t make the pages too cluttered
  • Don’t alter the Key Club logo or graphics
  • Don’t stress, just do your best!
  • Don’t use acronyms without typing the whole phrase out first.

General Tips

  • Ask your Lieutenant Governor for help or advice when needed.
  • Stick to a schedule when publishing newsletters.
  • Share your newsletter with your school, it will highlight all the great work your club has done.

More Tips

  • Take a look at your Division Newsletters (sent out by your Lieutenant Governor) for inspiration.
  • Include pictures! You want your members to enjoy reading it.
  • Make it colorful and visually striking

How?

There are multiple ways to produce a newsletter:

    • Microsoft Publisher
    • Microsoft Word
    • Canva
    • Adobe Illustrator
  • Any program you feel comfortable using should work fine.

  • Use online templates such as MailChimp to create a formatted email to be sent to your members with information
  • Use Canva, an online resource to create flyers or advertisements
  • Save your newsletters as a PDF; this will make it more accessible to members.
  • Your Lieutenant Governor can provide templates or you can make your own.

Using Social Media

  • Social Media is a great way to reach many members
  • If your club already has social media make sure to keep it updated so members don’t lose interest
  • Post events and service projects and create hashtags

Brand Guide

  • Use the approved fonts for your main body text
    • You can use non-approved fonts for headers/decoration
  • No restrictions on color

Examples of Social Media

Examples of effective social media:

    • A Facebook page or group open to members
    • Twitter or Instagram account that posts about upcoming events

If your club does not have social media, you should bring the idea up to your other officers

Distinguished Editor

  • A Distinguished Club Editor exhibits leadership and places Key Club as a top priority
  • Distinguished Editors are recognized for their hard work at District Conference (DCON)
  • This is a great guideline to set for yourself as club editor

These are some of the qualities of a Distinguished Editor:

    • A Minimum of 75 service hours
    • Produces regular newsletters & sends them to District Editor
    • Creates a club scrapbook
    • Attends KCKC and SZR
    • Attends Divisional Council Meetings
