How High School Works

Semestering

      • All grade 10 students must take 8 courses

(4 per semester)

1st semester: Sept to Jan – write exams

2nd semester: Feb to June – write exams

      • You can take a maximum of 7 grade 10 courses

Classes

      • 4 courses every day (60 min. each) 1 double/day.
      • Don’t pick courses because your friends are in it

(you probably won’t be in the same class)

How High School Works

Passing or Failing

      • If you fail a course, it doesn’t mean

you fail the year, it just means you may

have to take that course again

      • All students need to meet the Nova Scotia Graduation Requirements in order to graduate (this will be explained later). These requirements have nothing to do with what you want to be when you “grow up”.

Options and Opportunities

O2 is a program designed to help students work toward a career or occupation in learning contexts which provide linkages to the workplace.

Community Based Learning is an important part of O2, allowing students to explore a variety of careers. Students go on work placements during the school year, and take a number or courses designed to assist them in the market place.

Skilled Trades Courses

  • Skilled Trades courses are for students who want to explore the skilled trades as a possible career option.
  • Skilled Trades provide a mixture of theoretical and practical workplace activities using the basic tools of industry professionals
  • Designed to be taught by certified journeypersons.
  • Students receive apprenticeship hours based on time in class under the supervision of a certified journeyperson teacher.
  • Courses currently offered are Skilled Trades 10 and Construction Trades 11and Manufacturing trades 11

Credit Types

  • Advanced-These courses are designed to meet the needs of students who have demonstrated an exceptional degree of academic ability or achievement.
  • Academic – These courses are designed for students who expect to enter college, university or other post secondary institutions

  • Open – These courses are designed for students who are in academic or graduation level courses. Individual courses may meet entrance requirements of some institutions.
  • Graduation – These courses are designed for students who wish to obtain a graduation with a view to proceeding to employment or certain areas of post secondary study.

Grade 10 Course Options

English Courses

  • English 10 – Academic (1 semester)
  • English 10AP – Academic (1 semester) Students must be recommended by their English teacher) This course is for students that do very well in their English course. 90+
  • English 10 Plus – Academic (Full Year) This course is for students who have experienced difficulties in English Language Arts in Grades 7-9 and who require increased support in developing English Language skills.

Math Courses

  • Math 10 – (Full Year Academic) – This course is designed for students who score above 70 in Grade 9 Math. Students will receive one elective credit and one Math credit at the end of the course in June.

  • Math at Work 10 – (1 semester Graduation) This course is an introductory Math course designed for students who experience difficulty with the Grade 9 Math program.

  • Math Essentials 10-(1 semester Graduation) This course is designed for students who struggle in Math. These students typically have a history of difficulties in Math. ***Entrance into this course is by recommendation only.

*Any student that does not pass their Grade 9 Math will be placed in Math Essentials 10.

Science Courses

  • Science 10 (Academic) This course is designed to be a foundational science course for those who intend to take Chemistry, Physics or Biology. Please note that there is a strong math component to this course and students should be registering in academic math to be successful in this course

  • Science 10A/Science 10B (Academic) These two ½ credit courses are designed for students who wish to be exposed to some Physics, Chemistry and Biology but do not intend to study these courses further. These courses are not considered a prerequisite for Phys11, Chem11 or Bio11.

**Please note - If you are registering for Math at Work 10 or Math Essentials 10, you should choose Science 10 A/B.

Registration Process

    • Counsellors will meet with Gr. 9 students in February to discuss course selection and course options. Gr. 9 teachers will send home Math and English Recommendation Forms to be signed by parents. Any student who wishes to take a Math or English course other than what was recommended, must bring the signed form to the Guidance office and we will make the change for you.

    • Students will log into their Powerschool account and select their classes in early March once they receive their Math and English recommendations.

    • On the left hand side of the screen you will see “Class Registration”. This is the registration screen for you to select classes. The screen will be the same as the registration form that you were given to complete.
