Levels of Racism

  • Interpersonal
    • Being treated negatively by other individuals through micro-aggressions, stereotyping, and discrimination

    • Example: Not allowing someone to rent your apartment because of their race

​

  • Institutional
    • The ways in which particular policies, laws, and cultural practices can privilege or obstruct the success of particular social groups over others

​

    • Example: A law or policy that prevents people from getting a home loan from the bank because of their race

​

    • Ideas within a society that justify privileging some groups and subordinating others

​

​

    • Example– People acting like only members of particular racial groups can become good scientists

​

    • When members of an oppressed group come to believe (consciously or unconsciously) the negative messages about their group

    • Example: Members of a racial group believing that their hair or the shape of their eyes is not beautiful because it differs from the dominant standard of beauty
