STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The present study aims to find out the effectiveness of gamification strategy and achievement in English grammar among secondary school students. Hence the present study entitled as

“EFFECTIVENESS OF LANGUAGE GAMIFICATION STRATEGY ON ACHIEVEMENT IN ENGLISH GRAMMAR AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS”.

Effectiveness

The term effectiveness means a measure of the match between stated goals and their achievement”. (Fraser,1994)

In this present study, Effectiveness means the use of plan for instruction or presentation which causes a desired change in learner’s behavior. In the present study effectiveness of gamification strategy is considered.

Language Gamification Strategy

Language gamification strategy means employing well-designed digital and non-digital games to stimulate learners’ language, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities” (Rosenshine,1987)

In the present study the. The gamification strategy in learning grammar can increase motivation and engagement as the concept of gamification can bring about persistence and motivation to win and learn.

Achievement in English grammar

Achievement in English refers to performance of students in English grammar as measured using standardized test.

In the present study achievement in English grammar of 9th standard of students is considered.

Secondary school students

In the present study Students belonging to 8th, 9th, and 10th standard Kerala state are considered as secondary school students.

In the present study 9th standard students are selected as representatives of secondary school students.

Independent variables

The independent variable of the study is language gamification strategy.

Dependent variables

Dependent variable of the study is achievement in English grammar.

Objectives of the study

  • To compare the mean pre-test scores on achievement in English grammar among students of control group and experiment group.

  • To compare the mean scores of post-tests on achievement in English grammar for control group and experiment group among secondary school students.

  • To compare the mean pre test scores and mean post test scores of achievements in English grammar for control group among secondary school students

  • To compare the mean pre test scores and mean post test scores of achievements in English grammar for experimental group among secondary school students
  • To compare the gain mean scores of achievement in English grammar between control and experimental group among secondary school students.
  • To compare the adjusted mean post test score of achievement in English grammar between control group and experimental group among secondary school students by considering pre-test as co-variate.

Hypotheses of the study

  • There exists no significant difference in the mean pre test scores of achievements in English grammar among control group and experimental group
  • There exists no significant difference in the mean post test scores of achievements in English grammar of control group and experimental group among secondary school students
  • There exists no significant difference in mean pre-test score and post test scores of achievement in English grammar of control group among secondary school students

  • There exists no significant difference in the mean scores of pre-tests and post-test on achievement in English grammar experimental group among secondary school students
  • There exists no significant difference in the gain mean scores of achievement in English grammar between control and experimental group among secondary school students

Methodology of the study

Method of the study

Experimental method will be selected for the present study. Pre-test, post-test and non-equivalent group design will be used for the study

Sample

The sample will be selected using purposive sampling technique. A total sample of 80 students will be selected for the study. The sample will be consisted of 9th standard students.

The investigator will develop the following tools with the help of supervising teacher for collecting data.

  • Lesson transcript based on Learning outcome-based strategy.
  • Lesson transcript based on Gamification strategy.
  • Achievement test in English grammar.

  • Individual t test

  • analysis of co-variance (ANCOVA)
