We meet: every week on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons for practice (Only need to attend one practice per week) starting in October/November and running through March. Saturday tournaments starting in December with optional State, National, and Championship tournaments taking place in March, May and June.

Best Buddies

Opportunities for one-to-one friendships, leadership development, and inclusive activities for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Come build a friendship that can last a lifetime with one of your Prairie classmates and have fun while you are doing it!!

Activities vary from a movie nights, holiday parties, decorating cookies, to just hanging out for games and fun. Events usually happen on a monthly basis.

BPA is a career tech student organization in which students academically compete against students from around the country. The Mission of Business Professionals of America is to contribute to the preparation of global professionals through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills.

Color Guard

As a member of the Prairie High School Color Guard, you will rehearse, travel, perform and compete as an integral part of the award-winning Prairie Hawks Marching Band! You will have the opportunity to create stunning performances, lasting friendships, and lifelong memories!

Color Guard practices one evening a week with the full marching band, as well as one weekly sectional on their own. They rehearse during 1st period Band.and are credited with a PE class. They perform at Pep Assemblies, 4-5 home football games, in addition to 3-4 competitions and the exhibition-only Metro Marching Band Classic.

In 2024, the Band and Color Guard earned their 37th “Division I” rating at State Marching Contest.

English Honors

The Prairie High School English department is proud to announce the English Honors Award for the 2025-2026 school year. The English Honors Award provides the opportunity for students to be recognized for their dedication and passion for the language arts. We would love for you to join us this year! English Honors students will be awarded a graduation cord.

  • Successful completion of at least two advanced-level English courses:
    • AP Literature
    • AP Language and Composition
    • Kirkwood Composition
    • Other Kirkwood classes designated as English credit (ENG).
  • Final overall cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher in all 10th-12th ELA coursework.
  • Participation in events throughout the school year (TBD, but an example might be to make posters for National Poetry Month).
  • Submission of one original piece (genre of choice) per year of participation to a literary magazine or contest.

Applications will be made available at the end of first quarter.

FCCLA: Family, Career and Community Leaders of America

  • Open to any student in 8th through 12th grade that has taken or is currently enrolled in a Family and Consumer Sciences class can join!
  • FCCLA is a great opportunity to develop leadership skills, participate in community service projects and possibly compete at regional and state level individually or with a friend. There are officer positions and scholarship opportunities for seniors.
  • We will plan to meet once to twice a month.

  • Opportunities to work with animals and plants at the new Prairie Ag Learning Center (across the street from high school)

German National Honor Society

German National Honor Society (Delta Epsilon Phi), recognizes the outstanding academic achievement of learners of German. The group seeks to further the passions of German within their members but also to help share their passion with people in the community.

To be invited to be a member, you must:

  • have an overall GPA of at least 3.0
  • have a German rolling GPA of at least 3.5

There will be an application that goes out to eligible students in late September.

As a group, we do a service project to help people in need. We also bring in German experts to explain future plans, and will do fun activities like watching movies together.

Indoor Percussion Ensemble

  • Open to ALL Prairie students in grades 9-12 who want to learn more about percussion, marching & ensemble skills
  • A chance to work on percussion fundamentals, technique, marching & movement basics, plus learn a short

indoor show to perform for a few winter events

  • Parts written for all ability levels on snares, tenors, basses, cymbals, mallets, keyboards, and auxiliary percussion

Jazz Band One is a select, auditioned curricular music ensemble. The group, which meets during both semesters, studies jazz repertoire in a wide range of styles, the history of jazz, and improvisation. Each year, they present three concerts at Prairie High School and perform in multiple area jazz festivals. Additionally, they record a piece with a guest artist for KCCK’s Corridor Jazz Project.

Prairie Hawk Marching Band

22

The Prairie Hawks Marching Band represents a highly motivated segment

of our high school student population, involving approximately 150 students

each year combined with the Color Guard. Band members are also involved

in Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and one of two winter pep bands.

Each fall they entertain thousands of spectators through musical and visual

excellence, while helping to generate pride in our school and community.

Students have one two-hour rehearsal outside of school on Monday evenings, as well as daily rehearsals

during 1st period. They perform at 4-5 home football games from August-October, in addition to 3-4 competitions

and the exhibition-only Metro Marching Band Classic. They also host the annual “Bands Across the Prairie!”

In 2024, the Band and Color Guard earned their 37th consecutive “Division I” rating at State Marching Contest,

as well as traveling to Cedar Falls at UNI for the Bands of America Super Regional Championships. Students in Band

and Color Guard also have the opportunity to travel on the Music Department Trip once every three years.

National Honor Society (NHS)

National Honor Society (NHS) is an international organization that elevates students’ commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

NHS is an invite-only organization. All juniors and seniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.450 or higher are eligible to apply for membership. Applications are typically sent out in September each year.

Science National Honor Society

SNHS is an organization that empowers a new group of young thinkers who will be the future of industry, research, and scientific exploration for America. Our focus is on connecting with the scientific community and promoting science in our surrounding area. Members will participate in volunteer events and meetings, including guest speakers throughout the year.

Special Olympics

“Special Olympics empowers people to reveal their inner champion.”

This is a place where students with Intellectual disabilities, cognitive delays, or developmental disabilities can come and participate in sporting events allowing them to discover new strengths and abilities, skills, and success.

We typically do bowling in the fall (November) and track and field events in the spring (April).
