Nolan’s Career
When he make the films Following (1998) and Memento (2000) he was starting to make name for himself.
He then went on to direct a movie called Insomnia, and then Batman Begins.
This was well recieved woldwide.
Then the sequel, The Dark Knight, broke box office records. He also made The Prestige in 2006.
I just mentioned that he was the director for sci-fi thriller, Inception, which was also very popular.
In 2012, he produced the third film of his Batman saga, The Dark Knight Rises.
After this, he made a space film called Interstellar in 2014 and the World War II film Dunkirk in 2017.
Visual style
Nolan often has urban (city) settings in his film. The colours are often muted and his colour pallette is influenced by Film Noir.
Nolan’s Style and influences
Both Following and Memento had non-chronological narrative structures, with Memento receiving much of its attention for unfolding episodically in backward time. And Inception has stories that exist within other stories, as the characters explore the realm of a person's highly layered unconscious mind.
Nolan’s Style and influences
Lots of Nolan’s films are “thinking” films, where the audience has to think deeply.
Nolan’s Style and influences
His films also usually have a male lead (protagonist) who is try to come to grips with their past while working through complex challenges of the present day. Women in his films have been written as allies, heroes and/or romantic interests, some get killed off too.
His colour palettes have been influenced by his red-green colour blindness. Maybe that’s why he likes Film Noir...
The movie Interstellar has a red/blue colour pallette.
