History of TK in the LLESD

California’s Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program was created in 2010 by the Kindergarten Readiness Act. The law changed the entrance date for kindergarten from December to September. School districts could choose to establish TK Program. Las Lomitas did not establish a TK Program.

In 2021, Assembly Bill (AB) 130 was passed and required all school districts with a kindergarten program to establish a TK program to accept all four-year olds by the 2025-2026 school year. Las Lomitas announced there would be a TK program during the 2022-2023 school year and it would accept ALL four-year olds ahead of the 2025-2026 deadline.

All fully-credentialed teachers returned to school for additional early childhood education training in order to teach TK and to support Las Lomitas’s youngest learners.

Our program was developed to promote school readiness through play-based and hands-on learning experiences, with a strong emphasis on social-emotional development.

In the 2022 - 2023 school year, there were three TK classes.

In the 2023 - 2024 school year, there were four TK classes.

In the 2024-2025 school year, there are five TK classes.

  • TK is a play-based program

  • We teach through themes.

We introduce a new theme every

2-4 weeks.

  • These themes guide the books we read,

the projects we create, the centers and

incorporate all curriculum areas to

allow learning in the different areas to

be linked and put into context.

Parent Questions

  • How do we know if our child is ready for TK, particularly for young 4-year-olds?

Because it is play-based our program is designed to meet the needs of all four-year-olds where they are at. If they meet the birthday criteria, they are ready for our TK program!

  • If we wait until the following year, can they enroll in TK or will they be placed in kindergarten?

LLESD follows the State of California birthdate requirements when enrolling new students.

  • What is the starting date and where can I find the school calendar?

The 25-26 school year begins on Wednesday, August 20th. The calendar can be found at LLESD.org.

  • Does a TK student need to be potty trained?

We highly recommend that students come to TK fully potty trained. However, we understand that children may still need support at this age. We accept all students regardless of their level of potty training. We will have you provide an extra set of clothing to have on hand and we will help them when issues arise.

Parent Testimonials

Our teacher sends an INCREDIBLE newsletter in the children's backpacks. The newsletter sparks off conversations about the creations they are making/building at table time, new lessons that she is weaving into every aspect of the day, books they are reading, and activities from library and PE to music and art. Our son has become a talker who is proud to share what he is doing every day at school from math and social-emotional qualities like kindness, to playing with his new friends. Our son came home with a concern one day from school and our teacher handled it swiftly and most appropriately. We could not be happier with how the years has gone and are so grateful for the love, care, attention to detail and immense about of time and effort put into every single day and child.

Parent Testimonials

Our family has had the pleasure of having two of our children in the Las Lomitas Elementary TK Program, and we couldn't be happier with our experience. The play-based, flexible curriculum has allowed our kids to learn and grow in such a natural and engaging way. Our older son was able to express his creativity in amazing ways—one of our favorite memories is when he built a giant alligator out of egg cartons with the support of his teachers. Our younger son has made wonderful friendships and is truly cared for every day. The warmth, dedication, and open communication from the teachers have made this experience so special. Both of our children have absolutely thrived in this program, and we are incredibly grateful for the foundation it has given them!
