Sector focus; Film & Television

  • Huge growth across the UK; production spend has increased from £3.4 billion in 2017 to over £5.64 billion in 2021.
  • This growth has thrown up a challenge; skills shortages in production crews are now a widely reported problem, and highlighted in the recent BFI Skills Review.
  • It is estimated that continued film and TV production growth will require between 15,000 and 21,000 additional full-time equivalent employees (FTEs) by 2025.
  • Challenging work environments, that the industry needs to address, and there’s an appetite to do so.
  • Film London Directory and Filming in England Crew & Facilities Database. Check out ScreenSkills and the BFI. Keep an eye on BBC and Channel4 too!

  • Arts & Crafts has been as much impacted by digital democratisation as the music sector, with artists and makers able to leverage accessible e-commerce to access markets; Etsy, Big Cartel, Shopify.
  • In 2006, there were an estimated 32,000 professional makers in England and Wales, generating a turnover of £826m. In 2020, the total value of craft sales achieved over £3bn.
  • The broader design economy contributed £85.2bn in GVA to the UK. E.g. graphic designers working outside the creative industries has been growing year on year. (33,000 in 2020, up from 22,000 in 2016)
  • The NFT movement boom, but uncertain what its future looks like.

Sector focus; Fashion & Design

  • Robust growth across the fashion sector over the last 18 months, esp. luxury and sportswear sub-sectors.
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly advancing and starting to disrupt the creative industries, including art, fashion and design. There are now multiple AI generators that can output incredible designs (with significant human involvement.)
  • DALL-E, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion are all advancing text to image AI generation.
  • There is controversy and a lot of uncertainty around how they work and fair usage.
  • AI is being increasingly applied across the sector in other ways too; for trend forecasting, personal styling, visual searches and other relevant e-commerce areas.
  • Sustainability and ‘slow fashion’ conversations rage on across the sector and in public discourse.

Sector focus; Music

  • With such a large prevalence of freelancers in the music sector, combined with the impact of COVID on live music and venues, it’s been a very challenging time:
  • Employment plunged by 35% from 197,000 in 2019 to 128,000 in 2020.
  • Music industry’s economic contribution fell 46% from £5.8bn to £3.1bn in 2020.
  • But recorded music continues to thrive; In 2020, vinyl sales grew £87 million, up 31% from £66 million in 2019.
  • And streaming continues to grow; up £737 million, 15% from £638 million in 2019.
  • Brand and Image is growing increasingly important to all with ambitions to work in music; selling and streaming recorded music, audience engagement, merchandising, touring, performance streams etc.
  • Running alongside ongoing mergers and acquisitions, a long standing pattern in the music industry, the last 10+ years has seen a huge democratisation in the music industry, allowing more independent musicians to self-produce, self-publish and build a career. “Record companies have been replaced by online retailers and streaming services, big recording studios have been replaced by home studios and marketing agencies have been replaced by social media.”
