Introduction: While viewing different systems of government throughout the world, students will view Totalitarian/Autocratic systems of government. This lesson will provide students with a background on the history of the North Korean state and the government system that has been set into place.

Pre-Lesson Activities

Prior to this lesson, students will have already watched a CNN documentary, “Secret State of North Korea”. Students will have also created and had a pre-assignment quiz over North Korean historical leaders as well as other important key terms and concepts.

Lesson

  • Bellringer: “What is an autocratic system of government? What is 1 example of a country with an autocratic system of government?”
  • Whole group: students will then watch the following video from Vox
  • Following the video, students will then work with a partner to answer the following three questions; 1) What factors led to the totalitarian regime in North Korea? 2) What are the consequences of that regime to the North Korean people? 3) What are the consequences of that regime to the rest of the world? (Credit to KQED Public Media)
  • Whole group discussion of student answers/responses

Lesson

  • Students will use their Chromebooks and work with their partners to Research North Korean history. They will then use Prezi to create a timeline of North Korean history with no less than 12-15 important events. Students will also include pictures and/or other forms of media.
  • Closing Activity: Each student will be given a post-it note. For the closure activity they will need to write down one important/interesting fact about North Korea that they learned during their research and put the post it note on the back wall of the classroom.
