Law & Justice 2 / IP-42The 2021 – 2022 Year in Review

Well, here’s what school looked like last year……….

  • We started the school year under the “Veil of Covid-19”. Everybody lost somebody they knew to Covid-19.
  • Some schools were still virtual, some in-person and some a type of hybrid.
  • Every school system seemed to have their own “Masks Mandate”.
  • Students and staff were often out due to sickness, and indifference.

  • Well, here’s what school looked like last year……….Continued,

  • Staffing shortages and transportation issues plagued most if not all schools.
  • Contact tracing by the medical staff sent students home in mass.
  • Class sizes varied by either too many or too few students.
  • Discipline problems increased because of the “Covid Gap”.
  • Then, NCDPI introduces a new format to Law & Justice 2, just for good measure.

Law & Justice 2 / IP-42The 2021 – 2022 Year in Review

Law & Justice 2, How we got here:

  • Five years ago, NCDPI saw the need to change the IP 42 class from an extension of IP 41 to a format that students could gain a certification.
  • NCDPI aligned the new IP 42 with the “International Foundation of Protection Officers”(IFPO) curriculum.
  • This curriculum was designed for adults and formatted to be taught as a “stand alone course” for professional security and protection specialists.
  • While an excellent curriculum, it was VERY, VERY, LONG, and not user friendly to the average high school student or teacher.

Law & Justice 2 / IP-42The 2021 – 2022 Year in Review

Law & Justice 2, How we got here, Continued:

  • In March of 2021, NCDPI, Dr. Tom Washburn and some of your colleagues met in an effort to do a “Course Rewrite”.
  • This was done in an effort to streamline and realign it and to make the course more conducive to the high school environment.
  • The course was realigned from a textbook and PowerPoint format to a primarily PowerPoint and student activity format.
  • It was also condensed form 45 chapters and 12 units to 10 blocks of instruction focusing on the most important and relevant information.

Then along came “LAPSEN”

  • The Law And Public Safety Network, (LAPSEN) is the leading national organization supporting an educational framework for supporting secondary and post secondary schools.

  • This network creates curriculum and career pathways for students interested in law enforcement, security services, fire services and emergency management.

Then along came “LAPSEN” continued,

  • NCDPI, LAPSEN and the International Foundation of Protective Officers (IFPO) have now basically partnered with each other to bring NC CTE a curriculum that is relevant, industry authorized and (high school) student friendly.

  • For those teachers that have tried to deliver the original IP 42 (IFPO) course in the past, the new format, along with the support of LAPSEN, has been a welcome change in the course as a whole for both the student AND the teacher.

Law & Justice 2 / IP-42The 2021 – 2022 Year in Review

Methods I Used in the ‘21 – ’22 Year

  • I taught the IFPO in the Spring Semesters of both ‘21 and ‘22. (OLD format in ‘21, NEW format in ’22).
  • Results were 100% Certification in ‘21 and 94% Certification this year.
  • Converted all PowerPoints to either Guided Notes or Fill in the Blank.
  • Usually divided 90 minute class period into three (3) segments, consisting of a variety of PowerPoints/Lecture, Vocabulary, Quizzes, Interactive (Crosswords, word searches, Matching, Flash Cards, etc.)
  • Review and Quiz Platform was Quizizz.

Law & Justice 2 / IP-42The 2021 – 2022 Year in Review

Methods I Used in the ‘21 – ’22 Year, Continued.

  • Took quiz questions from PowerPoints, Practice Test, and Textbook “End of Chapter Questions”. Gave a quiz after every chapter.
  • Conducted “Hands On” assignments, ie; Security Threat Analysis, Crowd Management, Traffic Direction, Security Observations in the school, etc.
  • Used Google Classroom and posted PowerPoints at the conclusion of each chapter and required students to submit Guided Notes for a grade. (So I was assured they had seen and had access to quiz information)
  • Gave quizzes and assessments on Quizizzes platform through their Google Classroom so they had access to testable material all semester.

Getting Ready for the Credential Exam

  • Approximately 8 to 10 days before the exam, no more delivery of any new material. Complete last Unit Review and Test.
  • I have moved all 315 practice test to the Quia review platform.
  • Students review at least 3 units on Quia each class period. They can also review on their own time.
  • I conduct a class wide Quizizzes review on the SmartBoard from previous Unit Assessments. (Students like this brief competition)
  • I schedule the Certification Exam 5 days before EOC exams.

Managing content we could not cover

  • PowerPoints and Guided Notes were provided on the students’ Google Classroom for each chapter we did not have time to cover.
  • As the Guided Notes are short, I assign these simply as homework during the last six weeks of the semester.
  • These PowerPoints and Guided Notes along with the Quia review platform is all I assign.
  • I also use previous quizzes from the Quizizzes platform as a class wide or independent practice review if we have time or if they want to stay after school for a tutoring session

Law & Justice 2 / IP-42The 2021 – 2022 Year in Review

Benefits of the new IP 42 format,

  • Entire course is streamlined so the teacher is able to cover more critical material in less time.
  • New PowerPoints for each block of instruction that are more closely aligned to critical curriculum information.
  • PowerPoints can be used as a study guide if a teacher is absent or cannot cover a block of instruction.
  • Activities such as crossword puzzles, word searches, flash cards, vocabulary matching, and additional assignments along with answer keys are included.

Benefits of the new IP 42 format, Continued

  • The entire curriculum is provided through LAPSEN / NCDPI, including PowerPoints, lesson plans, pacing guidelines, vocabulary, student activities, daily reminders and resource needs.
  • Learning goals and standards are clearly defined.
  • The availability to include various projects for a block of instruction or for the entire course.
  • Teachers have the availability to teach each block of instruction in whatever order they desire.

Law & Justice 2 / IP-42The 2021 – 2022 Year in Review

Benefits of the new IP 42 format,

Continued some more….

  • The previous Interim Test and Practice Test are still usable for quizzes or for study guides.
  • The IFPO (2010 Edition) is now more of a resource as opposed to being a requirement.
  • There is enough material that teachers can “Tailor Make”, each block of instruction to fit the academic competency of their particular class.
  • NCDPI has now designated IP 42 as an, “Honors Course”.

Law & Justice 2 / IP-42The 2021 – 2022 Year in Review

Disadvantages of the new IP 42

  • Like anything “first time out”,….. There are still some bugs that we are working out. But we are working on those issues.
  • Some issues are links that don’t work, links that don’t have any resources attached. Some links aren’t as user friendly as they should be.
  • The course even streamlined, is still long. I was involved in the rewrite and still didn’t get through it. There can’t be any down time, teachers have to keep digging.
  • The subject matter is still what it is, “Security”. It’s tough to make it come alive. It takes some real creativity to make it interesting.

Law & Justice 2 / IP-42The 2021 – 2022 Year in Review

Test 1 – 2, Test 1 – 2, Test 1 – 2,………

  • Starting last fall, LAPSEN partnered with “Youscience” as the final exam testing and credentialing platform for both IP 41 and IP 42.
  • It’s a little tedious to begin with but after you learn the process, it’s “Easy Breezy”.
  • Be sure to get with your bookkeeper and CTE administration to purchase your test from Youscience. Usually two test per student.
  • Test not used are good for 365 days and can be used for next semester.
  • Students that pass their credential test are eligible for an immediate downloadable certificate .

Preview of Coming Attractions…….

  • We are continuing to work out the bugs and hope to have them rectified before the ’22 -‘23 beginning of school.
  • The current IP 42 test is the 180 question test that originally came from the IFPO. (If you’ve taken this test, you remember that many of the test questions need a lot of work)
  • The credential test is currently being rewritten by LAPSEN and some of your Law and Justice colleagues, so a better, shorter version of the test is “in the works”.
