How do I decide which math/science to take?

Are you going to college? If so, consider taking:

  • Algebra 2, AP Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus
  • Physics, Anatomy/Physiology, Forensics

If not, consider taking:

  • Math Models (CP), Algebraic Reasoning
  • Bio, IPC, 2 other sciences (Ag science?)

Testing Opportunities

  • ASVAB - 10th/11th grade
  • ACT/SAT - 11th/12th grade
  • PSAT - 10th grade
  • EOCs - 9th, 10th, 11th grade
  • TSI - 10th/11th/12th grade
  • If your student took Alg 1 in 8th grade (Accelerated Tester), they are required to take the ACT or SAT once in high school.

Dual Credit Classes

  • If you are taking Dual Credit classes, you need to be in (or have credit for) Algebra 2.
  • You must pass the TSIA2 Reading test in order to take DC classes at Kilgore College. If you choose to take MATH/ECON, you must also pass the TSIA2 Math test. This will be given for free on campus this spring.

Up to 27 credit hours:

  • ENGL 1301/1302 (Jr year)
  • HIST 1301/1302 (Jr year)
  • GOVT 2305/2306 (Sr year)
  • SPCH/FINE ART (Sr year)

Dual Credit Logistics

  • Some classes are Dual Credit, others are concurrent.
  • Students attend M-Th at the CTE Center in Overton.
  • Fridays in the HS Library
  • Transportation
  • Make-up Work

Dual Credit Cost

  • As of 2024, it is $341.22 for 2 classes/semester.
  • If your student qualifies for free/reduced lunch, they will probably not have to pay tuition (House Bill 8).
  • If you make an A or B, you will be reimbursed for your tuition payment.
  • If you pass the first semester of the class, you can continue to the second semester.
  • All books are provided.

Build Your Resume

  • Make a list of awards, accomplishments, activities, work experience, etc. by year.
  • Volunteer
  • This will all be useful when you are a senior applying for schools, scholarships, or jobs.
  • Students will be considered for National Honor Society membership in their junior year based on scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

  • P. 35-40 of the handbook lists classes and their weights.
  • Handbook Link
  • If you are trying to graduate in the Top 25%, it is important to understand how classes are weighted and when you can take them.
  • Students will receive verified GPA and class ranking in the first semester of their junior year.
