History

12

The ancient city was known as “Altilia”, from Alter Ilium, the "other troy". Another legend attributes the foundation to Althea, queen of the myrmidons.

Between the 6th and the 3rd century b.C. a massive line of megalithic walls was erected.

From the following century the importance of the city decayed.

It recovered some importance when the Emperor Frederick II refounded the city and ordered the construction of the large cathedral.

Murgia (plural: Murge) is the central area of Puglia, is a rectangular shaped karst plateau. The name derives from the latin "murex", which means "sharp stone". The Murge plateau is bordered by the Ofanto river, the "Tavoliere delle Puglie" to the north, the Adriatic sea to the north-east and the so-called Messapic depression, which separates it from the Salento peninsula, to the south. It is usually divided into Alta Murgia, with poorer vegetation, and Bassa Murgia, with more fertile land mainly cultivated with olive trees.
