The Design Process

INVESTIGATING AND DESIGNING

  • Identify the need
  • Design Brief - Summarise the need and everything involved with it (people, environment etc.)
  • Design Option Criteria + Product Criteria - Define what will best satisfy the need
  • Research - What else is out there that is similar? Can we borrow their ideas? Ask questions of materials, techniques. Are there any standards that have to be met?

The Design Process

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

5. - Visualisation - Sketch your concepts yourself and jot down your ideas

6 - Design Options and Selection - Create viable drawings of products that will solve the problem, then decide with your criteria which one fits best

7 - Working Drawings - Provide a drawing of what is needed to be built/created

The Design Process

PLANNING AND PRODUCTION

8 - Production Plan - Plan the production stage, material list, GANTT chart, etc.

9 - Production - Build your product/prototype

The Design Process

EVALUATION

10 - Product Evaluation - Evaluate what you created - Does it solve the problem? How well did you create your product, could it be improved upon?

11 - Production, Planning and Process Evaluation - Evaluation about how you worked, could you do something better next time and did you meet your goal and do what you intended?

Notes about the Design Process

  • The design process is intuitive and it flows chronologically (from start to finish)
  • You need to know all of the design processes to use it to its full advantage
  • You are supposed to make mistakes in this process. It’s apart of designing, but the process wants you to make them early
