What is Ultimate?

In Ultimate Frisbee, teams field 7 players at a time to work together to score points by catching the disc (frisbee) in an opposing end zone. Games are begun with a pull (kickoff/punt) to the opposite team, and once a player catches the disc, they cannot move except on a pivot foot (like in basketball). Ultimate is a transition game in which players move quickly from offense to defense on turnovers that occur with a dropped pass, an interception, a pass out of bounds, or when a player is caught holding the disc for more than ten seconds. The goal is to score 15 points before the other team does in the 90 minutes allotted.

Spirit of the Game

Ultimate relies upon a spirit of sportsmanship that places the responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of mutual respect among competitors, adherence to the agreed upon rules, or the basic joy of play. Protection of these vital elements serves to eliminate unsportsmanlike conduct from the Ultimate field. Such actions as taunting opposing players, dangerous aggression, belligerent intimidation, intentional infractions, or other 'win-at-all-costs' behavior are contrary to the Spirit of the Game and must be avoided by all players.

Mission Statement

It is the mission of Prior Lake Ultimate to provide increased opportunities for local youth to learn and play Ultimate while cultivating character, community, and player agency.

For those reasons we do not hold tryouts for team membership or cut players. All students are welcome to play with PLUTO regardless of their skill level.

Coaching Philosophy and Team Values

  • The goal is to do your best, not to be the best.
  • Build a positive, ever-improving team, with a clear understanding of the rules of Ultimate.
  • Spirit of the Game.
  • Students First, Players Second
  • Treat others as you wish to be treated.
  • Handle yourself under pressure.
  • Friendly banter is OK, taunting is not.
  • Wanting to win is still part of the game, but so is fair play. Wanting to win does not mean being a jerk.
  • This is not an “eye for an eye” sport.
  • Breathe. Restraint is the sometimes the difference between a good player and a bad one.
  • When you do the right thing, people notice.
  • Be generous, praise, and congratulate both your own teammates and others.
  • Impressions linger. Everyone remembers those teams that were fun to play, and those that weren’t.
  • Have fun. Go hard, play hard, play fair.
