Home-School Communication

  • All teachers in second grade use ClassDojo to communicate. If there is any written information that would go home in their classroom folder.
  • John R. Good has a red folder that is usually sent home on Thursdays, unless something important is meant to go home on another day.
    • Please make sure to check backpack for their red folder or their classroom folder for any communication.
  • If there is a matter of urgency we recommend contacting the school reception, so that they can get ahold of the teacher that is needed.

Homework Expectations

Homework is an important way for students to practice what they are learning in class and to continue building their skills at home. While we understand that parents have busy schedules, we highly encourage you to support your child with homework when possible. Even sitting with your child for a few minutes if they are struggling can make a big difference. With your help, our students will continue to grow and succeed academically even with just a little extra practice, including on weekends.

Here are our expectations for second grade:

Math Students will have math homework every day including Friday’s for extra practice. The homework will always be based on what was taught in class that day, giving students a chance to review and strengthen their understanding.

Reading Students are expected to read 15 minutes every day at home. This daily reading helps them build fluency, confidence, and a love for reading. If you would like to keep track of their reading we have Beanstack in our classlink which is free and counts the minutes for their reading. The district also offers AMIRA for reading support. Optional: Writing about what they read. After reading, students may also write a few sentences about their book to practice comprehension and writing skills.

Important Note: Homework is meant for review and extra practice. Students will not be penalized if homework is not completed. However, we strongly encourage consistent practice at home, as it makes a big difference in their learning.

We truly believe that with consistent practice and family support, our second graders will thrive. Thank you for all you do to help your child succeed!

How Can Parents Support Students?

Parents can help support your students by bringing them to school every day on time. You can also help students learn at home by establishing routines and a quiet study place, promoting literacy through reading, encouraging curiosity and critical thinking with questions, and ensuring a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition and exercise. Parents also can support students by connecting with teachers to support with their education, and behavior.
