Survey Development

  • Start with the end in mind
  • Analytics
    • Discover meaningful data patterns and insights
    • How will your survey provide actionable information?
  • Cyclical process:
    • Reporting (data)
    • Analysis (numbers, trends)
      • Do the outliers materially affect the outcome?
      • If yes, throw them out.
    • Research (why these trends)
    • Recommendation
    • Remedy

Survey Development

  • What information will survey provide?
  • What are you doing with this data?
  • How much detail do you need to make decisions?
  • Vary the types of questions
    • Likert scales (how many points?)
    • Open-ended questions provide valuable information, but are more cumbersome to analyze.
  • Keep all surveys to under 5 minutes.
  • Only ask necessary questions
  • Use clear language.
  • Only ask one question at a time.

Survey Development

  • Explain key elements in introduction to survey
    • Don’t lie (about time, etc.)
    • Try not to use subjective words like “few”
    • Don’t overshoot expectations
    • Don’t overdeliver
    • Tell people what kind of information will be provided and what you will do with it.
  • Shift from stale, black and white, PC-language to language with a personality (HD - “surprise & delight”) - tone of voice
