Numbers 28:16-29:40

As well as teaching the Israelites to observe a day of rest and worship every Sabbath, God gave Moses other important days of joyful or solemn celebration for Israel. In each year there was one official day of FASTING and REMEMBERING, this is called the Day of Atonement, and there were three yearly feasts, sometimes called the Pilgrim Feasts: Passover, Pentecost (Feast of Weeks), and the Feast of Booths (or Tabernacles).

The word "holiday" comes from "holy day"! Many holidays are connected to seasons and events in the farming year. We will look at them in this lesson.

Why did Israel have to celebrate

these holy days?

God told Israel to celebrate these

special days so they could:

    • Get together (assemble) to say thank-you to God.
    • Remember important events.
    • Have a break from work.

Q: What celebration has God given us that replaces these Jewish feasts?

Q: What does Memorial meeting mean?

A: It means remembering what Jesus did for us and giving thanks.

Q: Is getting together (assembling) still important for us today?

Q: Is a solemn celebration any time when people gather to remember something good or bad?

A: Yes, you can celebrate when you are sad or happy.
