What is the National Junior Honor Society?

The NJHS is made up of a diverse group of individuals who show leadership at school and around town, earn good grades, participate in class, and portray ideal character. The NJHS is a nationwide program which operates in states and territories of the United States, such as Hawaii, Alaska, The District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, as well as in areas of Canada. The five main pillars of the NJHS are Service, Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Citizenship.

What is Character?

Another important requirement in order to be a member of the society, you must be of good character throughout your years @ SMS which means you should ALWAYS make good choices and be kind, honest, determined, influential, and hardworking, both in and out of an academic environment. Be the student caught being good! Be the student teachers consider a positive role model!

What is Leadership?

In order to be a member of the society, we look at leadership in many ways:

Are you a positive leader inside and outside of school?

Have you been appointed leadership roles inside or outside of school?

Are you responsible, involved, and are you a team player inside or outside of school?

Can you get group of people engaged in a positive way in class and in the hallways?

Are you able to work with different groups of people and show sense of pride in your school and community?

What is Community Service?

Since giving back is one of the most important parts of our society, members of the National Junior Honor Society are very involved in their community. In order to become a part of the NJHS, you must have 10 hours of community service within the past year. If you hope to be in the society and you are not currently involved in service projects in the community, now is the time to get involved! Most students who are members get involved because they want to always not just to be in the society!

Once you are a part of the society, you are expected two hours of service every month. This may sound like a lot, but often times, you will be so engaged in the activity, you won’t even realize it’s service!
