Acts 2:5-11;41
5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language…9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites…11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”….41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

Holy Spirit.
BIG IDEA: Jesus fulfilled his promise by sending the Holy Spirit at Pentecost to empower his initial followers, initiating the worldwide proclamation of the gospel; a mission we are urged to actively participate in.
Acts 1:12-26
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away. 13 And when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. 14 All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.
Acts 1:12-26
15 In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said, 16 “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17 For he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry.” 18 (Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. 19 And it became known to all the

inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms, “‘May his camp become desolate, and let there be no one to dwell in it’; and “‘Let another take his office.’ 21 So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.”
Acts 1:12-26
23 And they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also called Justus, and Matthias. 24 And they prayed and said, “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen 25 to take the place in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place.” 26 And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 2:1-13
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together,

Acts 2:37-41
37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
We believe that the Holy Spirit, in all that He does, glorifies the Lord Jesus Christ (Jn. 16:14). He convicts the world of its guilt (Jn. 16:8; 1 Cor. 2:14). He regenerates sinners (Ezek. 36:25-27; Jn. 3:3, 5; 1 Cor. 12:3; 2 Cor. 5:17; Eph. 2:5; Col. 2:13; 1 Thess. 1:4-5; 2 Thess. 2:13; Tit. 3:5; James 1:18; 1 Pet.1:3), and in Him they are baptized (Rom. 3:24, 5:15-21, 12:5; 1 Cor. 1:2, 5:19, 15:22b; 2 Cor. 5:17; Gal. 1:22, 2:17, 3:28; Eph. 1:4, 2:12, 3:6, 4:32; 2 Tim. 2:10; 1,Thess. 4:16) into union with Christ (Rom. 8:15,23, 9:4; Gal. 4:5; Eph. 1:5; Tit. 3:7 75 Matt. 12:49-50; 2 Cor. 6:18; Eph. 3:14; 1 Jn. 3:14-18 76 Jn. 14:17; Rom. 8:11; 1 Cor. 3:16) and adopted as heirs (Rom. 8:15,23, 9:4; Gal. 4:5; Eph. 1:5; Tit. 3:7 ) in the family of God (Matt. 12:49-50; 2 Cor. 6:18; Eph. 3:14; 1 Jn. 3:14-18 ). He also indwells (Jn. 14:17; Rom. 8:11; 1 Cor. 3:16), illuminates (1 Cor. 2:2; 2 Cor. 4:4-15; Eph. 1:17-19; Phil. 1:9-11 ), guides (Jn. 16:13; Acts 15:28; Rom. 8:4,14; Gal. 5:16,18 ), equips (Rom. 12:4-8; 1 Cor. 12:4-10; Eph. 4:7-11; 1 Pet. 4:10-11 ) and empowers (Acts 1:8, 10:38; Rom. 15:13; 1 Cor. 12:11; Eph. 3:16; 2 Tim. 1:7 ) believers for Christ-like living and service (Acts 6:8; Rom. 8:4-6,12-16; 2 Cor. 13:14; Gal. 3:3,5, 5:22-23,25; Eph. 2:22, 4:3; Phil. 2:1-2 ).

The whole essential difference is this: In Ephesians there is an exhortation to us to do something, whereas in every single instance of the baptism of the Spirit it is something that happens to us, which we do not control. Pg 77
The Holy Spirit:
[We] can produce a number of converts, thank God for that, and that goes on regularly in evangelical churches every Sunday. But the need today is much too great for that. The need today is for an authentication of God, of the supernatural, of the spiritual, of the eternal, and this can only be answered by God graciously hearing our cry and shedding forth again his Spirit upon us and filling us as he kept filling the early church. Pg 278
The Holy Spirit:
What is it that inevitably happens when one is baptized by the Lord Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit? Well, first and foremost I think we must put this- a sense of the glory of God, an unusual sense of the presence of God. What the Holy Spirit does is make real to us the things which we have believed by faith, the things of which we have had but a kind of indirect certainty inly. The Holy Spirit makes things immediately real. Pg 85
The Holy Spirit:
I referred to that elsewhere when I pointed out the terrible danger of trying to produce it or to induce it or to help it to come by relaxing yourself and breathing in deeply etc. All that belongs in the realm of psychology. You can do nothing about the baptism of the Spirit. It is ‘given’ his operation, his action. It is altogether God. It happens to us. But here in the realm of sanctification it is always exhortation, always an appeal to us to appeal what we have already learned. Pg 139
The Holy Spirit:
“If you are in this position of seeking, do not despair, or be discouraged, it is he who has created the desire within you, and he is a loving God who does not mock you. If you have the desire, let him lead you on. Be patient. Be urgent and patient at the same time. Once he leads you along this line he will lead you to the blessing itself and all the glory that is attached to it.” pg 231.
