Hello! I’m Ms. W.

I am SO excited to learn with you this year. I have taught 5th grade, 2nd grade, 1st grade, and Kindergarten.

Together we will work to become the best learners and human beings we can be!

Some fun facts about me:

  • I love kayaking and hiking.
  • Traveling is something I enjoy because trying new foods is the best.
  • Every few months, I foster sets of kittens. They are precious!
  • Diet Coke, Cheese-Itz, and chocolate are some of my favorite foods.

Go Rockets!

We are a family of learners. This means we will have fun together, learn how to talk and disagree with one another, and use teamwork to keep our space ready to learn.

As we begin the year, we will work together to create our idea of “The Perfect Classroom!”

In our classroom, we have -

  • a water fountain (please provide a water bottle for your student to fill)
  • a handwashing sink
  • a hand sanitizer station
  • cubbies for student belongings
  • tables with hanging baskets and chairs

Our Learning

Using the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS), reading includes - literature, informational, writing, handwriting (print), language, & foundational skills. As a School-Based Decision Making Council (SBDM), we use the follow curriculums to guide our instruction.

  • Foundational Skills
    • Heggerty Phonemic Awareness
    • Recipe for Reading (phonics)
  • Handwriting
    • Handwriting without Tears
  • Comprehension, Vocabulary, & Writing
    • EL Education

Approximately 80 minutes of our day is invested in mathematics instruction. In 1st grade one of our primary goals is to build number sense. Number sense is the ability to play with numbers. Students can visualize problem solving, perform calculations quickly, and are flexible in their mathematical strategies. Students who have strong number sense solve problems in more than one way and check that their answers make sense. Our math block will include:

  • Whole-group lessons (Illustrative Mathematics)
  • Number Talks
  • Math Centers and Games

Learning to explore the world, ask questions, make connections, and become global citizens - 40 minutes of our day will be spent in science and social studies.

Kentucky’s new social studies standards are inquiry-based, so we will be exploring many BIG questions throughout the year.

Our science units will accompany of our reading curriculum (EL Education) to build students’ background knowledge.

Working to become emotionally-literate individuals is an important part of grow. 3-4 mornings each week, we will explore different components of emotional learning (communicate, emotions, problem solving etc.) using the Second Step curriculum.

This is our tentative schedule. As we learn this routine, our transitions (restrooms and handwashing) will become faster. This will allow us more time for core instruction.

Students should bring to school their backpack, a water bottle, a nut-free snack, and closed shoes. Each day students will bring all of their things home, in case of closure.

Technology will be regularly integrated into our instruction. Our District uses Google as our Learning Management system. That means most of our tech tools (Slides, Docs, Classroom) will be google based. Your child will have an ID number, a school-based email address, and a password. These will be shared with you at the beginning of the year, as well as, added to students’ home folder.

For extra practice at home, students are welcome to use any of the programs in blue after school, on the weekends, or on breaks!
