HOW YOU’RE ASSESSED

• The S&L assessment tests 3 assessment objectives:
• AO7 – Demonstrate presentation skills in a formal setting
• AO8 – Listen and respond appropriately to spoken language, including questions and feedback to presentations
• AO9 – use spoken standard English effectively in speeches and presentations
• After your speech, you will be awarded with a pass, merit, distinction or fail. (Don’t panic: we will not be letting any of you fail.)

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

• You need to produce a short speech to be delivered to a small audience and filmed for the exam board.
• Your speech must be at least 3 minutes long and no longer than 7. (5 minutes is the perfect time to aim for – around 600 words.)
• You also need to be prepared to respond to questions from the other students and the English teachers. Therefore, you need to be prepared to ask each other questions too.
• You may use cue cards to help you to remember your speech, but you should avoid relying too heavily on these.
• The audience will comprise:
• The other students being assessed in the same ‘slot’ as you (no more than 7)
• Either Mr Smith, Mrs Whitehill or Mrs Murray.

• From the exam board:
• Beth takes on a challenging topic, and presents a strong sense of her own personal feelings about the issues she addresses. Her talk is clearly organized, and indeed she marks steps in her evolving argument, but the organisation is slightly less effective because of the long sentences she uses, often linked by ‘and then’.
• She has a range of vocabulary (‘aspiring to marry’) but is not always sophisticated in her expression (‘other sorts of romance books like that’).
• She listens to questions and responds formally with some elaboration of further ideas. She demonstrates confident use of spoken Standard English.

• From the exam board:
• There are times when Beth hits the descriptors for Distinction, especially in her engagement with the audience, but she does not do so in all areas, especially the strand which refers to vocabulary and structure.
• For that reason she is awarded a MERIT.

• From the exam board:
• Charlotte is relaxed and engages very well with her audience. She has a calm authority about her, both when presenting and when answering questions.
• She highlights sophisticated concepts through reference to data, both researched and personal, and the use of rhetorical strategies, especially at the beginning and end, give her presentation an overall shape.
• She responds thoughtfully and perceptively to audience questions and copes well with the adult’s challenging final question. This shows that she can engage with sophisticated ideas. At all times she demonstrates assured and flexible use of spoken Standard English.

NEXT STEPS

• Your assessments will be taking place from October 30^th-5^th November, and you will be notified by your English teacher of you slot at least one week in advance.
• It is up to you to make sure you are fully-prepared for the assessment and have any notes/cue cards ready. Assessments cannot be rescheduled if you are unprepared on the day.
