CA Sanctuary State

What does it mean for California to be a “sanctuary state”?

The California Values Act (SB 54) ensures that no state and local resources are used to assist federal immigration enforcement and that our schools, our hospitals, and our courthouses are safe spaces for everyone in our community.

When was this law passed?

SB 54 was signed into law on October 5, 2017 and went into effect January 1, 2018.

  • Local police and county sheriffs and all governing institutions of the State of CA cannot transfer a person to ICE
    • Excluding people who commit a crime or serious felonies
  • If they follow the law, the state protects them from ICE
    • REP4ALL has not yet been passed
