The past perfect is used to make it clear that ONE event happened BEFORE another in the PAST. The past perfect is made from : had + V .past participle(3)
Example:
I had saved my document before the computer crashed.
Ali had gone out when I arrived in the office.
He realized he had lost his keys after he arrived home.
By the time I got home , the food had cooled down.
