What is the K12 Strong Workforce Program?

  • The Strong Workforce Program (SWP) was initially created in 2016 to allow community colleges to enhance and expand career technical education (CTE) and workforce training programs in order to better prepare college students for high-wage employment in industries that meet regional labor market needs;

  • In 2018, funding for the SWP was made available to high schools and middle schools serving grades 7-12 to support the development or expansion of high-quality CTE at the K-12 level (K12 SWP);

  • The San Diego Imperial Counties Regional Consortium supports local K12 SWP efforts to implement the regional four year plan.

Tips

Topics to discuss with your high school partner(s):

  • Consider where the high school pathways are. How can creating a MS pathway or wheel program help with equity and access?
  • Determine which programs or pathways your students are most interested in;
  • Which pathways connect from the high schools through to the community college level? Which pathways are expanding or developing at the high school level? At the community college level?
  • What career awareness/exploration tools or resources is your high school using? (ex. Xello, WoW) Is this something that can be adopted at the middle school level?
  • Budget needs (application should be as specific as possible)
