Onset and Rime
Onset and rime forms a single syllable word.
Onset - The letters before the vowel
Rime - The letter of the vowel and the letters after the vowel
Onset and Rime
For example, in the word ‘bird’
Onset - /b/
Rime - /ird/
Silent Letters
When you pronounce a word, not the sounds of all letters are pronounced.
The unpronounced letters are called silent
letters.
Some examples for silent letters
Silent K -> before n -> knight, knock
Silent B -> after m -> thumb, numb
Silent U -> after g -> guard, guild
Silent T -> after s -> listen, whistle
Silent H -> after c -> character, chair
Silent W -> before r -> wrap, write
