  1. Do NOT miss Deadlines
  • Missing deadline prevents other staffers from getting their work done
  • 1 point is deducted for each day a story is late

2. Communicate

  • Be honest. Faking progress only hurts other staffers
  • Communication is key in NP; talk to others in class, or use Basecamp when you’re outside of class

3. Start with the horse/Name the dog

  • When writing be straightforward with the topic. PLEASE do not dance around it (only say things once).
  • Start with the most important information and make your way down to finer details. (Upside down pyramid)

4. Be real

  • Never make-up sources or quotes. Such actions destroy the authenticity of the paper

5. Fight Club rule

  • What happens in North Pointe stays in North Pointe
  • Concerns should travel up the totem pole, not down

6. The Living room rule

  • Do not interview people who are too close to you
  • If you would feel comfortable with them sitting in your living �room, someone else must do the interview

7. Revisions will go on as long as they have to

  • Don’t take it personal
  • Everyone gets their work edited
  • If at all possible, sit with your first or second reader so you understand their comments and the changes they are suggesting

8. Don’t trust ANYONE

  • Sources lie so ALWAYS fact-check

9. Hold your criticism for 24 hours

  • Take time to process an issue before you seek a solution
  • Remember that all actions have consequences and most problems have solutions

  • Be a team player
