Wonder-Full: Using informal social learning to drive engaged traditional online learning

In this presentation, we will talk about how modern social content creators use “Moments of Wonder” to capture learner attention and how instructional designers can do the same in their courses. We will explore research and design principles that back the use of high-level engagement content moments followed by more traditionally structured pedagogy. We will brainstorm what “Moments of Wonder” could look like in a number of course areas. And finally, we will share how you can work with your instructors and content experts in currently running courses, revisions, and new builds to add “Moments of Wonder” in the learning context… and maybe even make your course Wonder-Full.

Do most courses start like this? Or…

  • Sometimes
  • Often Chronological (i.e. History of the Field)
  • Topic progression focused
  • Same order as the textbook
  • Cumulative
  • What you’re going to learn, but not WHY it matters to ME (the learner)

Beginning of a Course

When a learner enters a course, we have their undivided attention. The way we utilize those first few moments of wonder can have a profound impact on the learner experience. By utilizing big questions, videos, and engaging images, we can capture learners as they begin their course journey. UNI 194 - Explore by Design: Self-Discovery, Majors, and Careers

Learners Creating Moments of Wonder

Another way that we can use storytelling in a course is by allowing learners to share their stories with us. By designing assignments that incorporate workforce readiness skills while meeting learning objects, learners can explore and create their own moments of wonder.UNI 194 - Explore by Design: Self-Discovery, Majors, and Careers
