The 7 Steps
Step 6: Structured Conversations
What is a structured conversation?
Asking students to talk with each other (or YOU in this case) using specific language/vocabulary about a topic. Structured conversations support students to speak in complete sentences and use new academic vocabulary in context!
A simple strategy that weaves structured conversation into instruction is QSSSA or (Question, Signal, Stem, Share, Assess).
QSSSA Planning Sheet
Question: | What is a shape with 2 sets of parallel lines? |
Signal: | *Choose a signal* |
Stem: | A shape with 2 sets of parallel lines is a ____________. |
Share: | *Student uses the sentence stem to answer the question* |
Assess | Parent can assess if student answered Correctly or needs to try again. |

Step 7: Structured Reading & Writing Activities
Step 7 is about structuring your Reading and Writing activities so that students gain a deep understanding of content concepts. We create structure by clearly defining our purpose, our plan and the process for each reading or writing activities
