OSEL Mission Statement

The Office of Social & Emotional Learning (OSEL) partners with CPS schools and networks to develop and sustain supportive learning communities founded on caring relationships and robust multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) that meet the social and emotional needs of all students. OSEL promotes the development of self awareness, self management, social awareness, interpersonal skills, and responsible decision-making skills that students need for college, career, and life success.

Transformative SEL

Transformative SEL is a process whereby young people and adults build strong, respectful, and lasting relationships that facilitate co-learning to critically examine root causes of inequity, and to develop collaborative solutions that lead to personal, community, and societal well-being.

This form of SEL is aimed at redistributing power to promote social justice through increased engagement in school and civic life. It emphasizes the development of identity, agency, belonging, curiosity, and collaborative problem solving.

The Supportive Schools Certification process guides schools in setting meaningful goals and action steps toward meeting the Chicago Public Schools School Climate Standards, as outlined in the District’s Five-Year Vision. Supportive Schools Certifications are indicated as badges of Emerging, Established, or Exemplary distinctions. This process is meant to showcase your schools strong schoolwide SEL practices, dedicated and talented staff, and incredible students1
