  • An account of one’s life

  • When applying for a job, aspects are also used in college/university applications and other types of job application so having a good solid CV is important – it’s an employer’s first impression of you

  • Do: make it look professional, logical/ordered, check for spelling errors, include aspects relevant for the position you’re going for, include extra curriculuar information/skills qualities you have that would make you stand out
  • Don’t: write an essay, hand write it, make it too long, give irrelevant information, have a ridiculous email address!

Future Aspirations: CVs

This lesson we are going to make a start on writing our CVs. Before we get going some reminders:

Too little info . . . Unprofessional layout

Too much info . . . 30 second glance . . . It’s going in the bin!

  • clear and concise.
  • Looks professional – no fancy fonts or colouring

CV Writing

By the end of this lesson, each of you needs to have produced your own CV. Your CV must include:

Your personal contact details –

Address, phone number, SENSIBLE email address

Your education history –

Expected GCSEs for each subject, results, any additional qualifications

Past work experience -

Place, address, details of what you did and skills acquired

Extra-curricular activities –

Instruments played, sports teams played for, clubs you're a member of, D of E Award,

any other positive achievements

Personal Qualities –

A bit about you, are you hardworking? Reliable? A team player? A great communicator? An IT expert?

References –

A reference from Head teacher/ Head of Year and one other (could be from a past employer)

Check spelling and grammar! – 70% of CV’s are rejected due to spelling mistakes!

Make sure you have the correct telephone number!

Don’t lie.

Tailor your CV to suit the job/course you are applying for.

Completed your CV?

Your task this lesson is to do some preliminary research for our next couple of lessons.

Task 1: Find out what the Equality Act 2010 is and how this supports people in the workplace.

Task 2: Research the NUS https://www.nus.org.uk/ find out who they are and what they do. Write a paragraph to explain how this could be of benefit to young people

Task 3: Research local job opportunities in the Selby Area. Create a brief presentation to outline what the job market is like in Selby, the type of businesses that exist within the area and the types of jobs people can do including the skills and qualifications required.
