The week of March 30th, affiliate supervisors will be sent an email with two surveys. One of these will be the Affiliate Satisfaction Survey.

The Affiliate Satisfaction Survey will ask affiliates about their satisfaction with Parents as Teachers. This information will be used to help Parents as Teachers National Center, State and Country Offices, and National Trainers improve affiliates' experiences and learn from their feedback.
The survey will be shorter than previous years to focus on overall satisfaction.
Only one person from each affiliate should submit the survey, but others are welcome to provide their input. Participation is optional.
The survey will be open for responses until May 1.

There is also a second data collection effort that will be going out in the same email, the week of March 30, which is the Home Visiting Workforce Survey.

This Workforce Survey is part of a research project led by the Urban Institute, an independent research organization and supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).
Urban Institute is working to create a cross‑model dashboard of the home visiting workforce to inform staff recruitment, retention, and professional development. They’ve asked models to distribute and promote their survey, which collects information on home visitor and supervisor counts, staff turnover, vacant positions, and starting salaries.
Participation is optional but responses will help them build a more accurate and comprehensive dashboard. All data submitted is confidential and goes directly to the Urban Institute. Model developers will only see summarized or de‑identified results—no individual program responses.
If you go to the survey link in the slide or scan the QR Code, you’ll first see Urban Institute’s consent form, which explains more about the project and how program data will be used. Responses will be accepted through May 1.

Let’s start where many visit plans start – with the Parent Educator Resources. Specific to the topic of maternal mental health, we have here a few resources that are good reads to get a strong context and background information.

The first one on here is extremely important because it encourages the parent educator to actively consider that a parent’s response to pregnancy may have a wide range and not be predictable. This prepares the parent educator to anticipate varied feelings about pregnancy and help the parent feel more comfortable being open about these feelings.

As we know, with most topics, mental health is not exclusive and can be covered in relation to many other topics. In this case, parent educators can benefit from reading about maternal mental health in relation to topics on other Parent Educator Resources, such as Supporting Prenatal Attachment, Prenatal Parenting Behaviors, Prenatal Health and Wellness, and Navigating Healthcare During Pregnancy and Beyond

In addition to the Parent Educator Resources, of course, are the Parent Handouts. These four are very specific to the pregnancy and postpartum period. Prenatal attachment is an interesting one here because it invites the parent to describe their connection with their unborn baby.

It might not seem to connect to maternal mental health on the surface, but in reality, how the parent feels about their connection to their unborn baby can be a strong sign of underlying mental health and/or stress.

Of course, we do want to normalize that things can certainly be difficult following a baby’s birth. But, at the same time, we want to keep the door open for parents to feel comfortable telling us when they feel like their experience might be removed from what is considered normal.

Another resource is Mothers and Babies, (click) a perinatal depression prevention intervention that’s easy for providers to implement and easy for clients to understand and utilize in their daily lives to improve mood and cope with stress in their lives.

It’s designed to be delivered by clinic- or community-based providers from a variety of educational and professional backgrounds.

Maternal Mental Health and Postpartum Scenario #1

What the Family is experiencing:

A mother recently gave birth to her first child 3 weeks ago. However, over the past week the mother has noticed that she has been crying easily, had higher levels of fatigue, and feels overwhelmed by small decisions and whether she does them "right". When talking about her experience as a new mother, she affirms her love for her child but emotionally expresses concerns about her current state. She looks to you for guidance.

What the Parent Educator can do:

Normalize how the parent feels
Provide the mother with the Parent Handout "Adjusting After Your Baby's Birth"
Encourage the mother to talk to someone within their social support network
Inform the mother that sometimes the best way to care for the child is to make sure she is cared for, then suggest ways that the mother can take care of herself during this time.

What the Family is experiencing:

The significant other of the mother calls you a day before your scheduled visit expressing concerns around the recent behavior of the mother. The mother is experiencing rapid mood swings, where the lows include extreme lashing out and lying in bed for days at a time. The significant other is having a difficult time communicating with the mother to understand what she is feeling. He wants to provide support but does not know where to start, which is why he called you.

What the Parent Educator can do:

Build trust through forming the relationships with other members of the family (Happens before this scenario)
Provide the Father with the Parent Handout "Family Support for Parental Depression" via the PAT Engage App
Instruct the Significant other of healthy ways he can lean in and communicate effectively to allow the mother to open up emotionally about how she's feeling
Plan to use a screening tool during the visit for the mother and significant other
If applicable, provide resource connections to help support the family's mental health
