Kindergarten Screening Process

  • NYS requires all incoming kindergartners to be screened.
  • This spring, you will receive an appointment date to bring your child to Smith Clove for kindergarten screening during the summer
  • Please bring with you to screening:
    • Original birth certificate or Passport
    • Immunization record
    • Proof of residency
      • signed closing papers, deed, or lease
      • recent utility bill
    • Custody papers (if applicable)
  • Screening process includes:
    • Assessing simple concepts such as name, shapes, colors, numbers, and letters
    • Fine motor skills (tracing and cutting)
    • Speech language and articulation
    • Health history
  • Complete screening form

Class Placements/Notifications

  • We do not take specific teacher requests
  • Principals make up balanced classes after all students have been screened
  • Supply lists will be available on the Smith Clove website early in the summer
  • You will receive a letter in mid-August informing you of your child’s teacher
  • Kindergarten orientation will take place a few days prior to the first day of school
  • E-mail/Parent Portal

Learning….

  • Students are met on their level & worked with to build on his or her own strengths.
  • Whole class and small group instruction
  • Our reading program is literature based and correlates to our Phonics and Writing programs.
  • Our Math programs use a number of different strategies and teaching tools to build a solid foundation that can be built upon
  • Choose Love is our Social-Emotional curriculum that incorporates real life and tangible lessons that focus on courage, gratitude, forgiveness and compassion in action.

Some ways to help get your Kinder ready…..

    • Making sure your child can dress him/herself-snap, zip, and button.
    • Practice with them how to use a public restroom. Toileting and washing hands independently prior to entering school.
    • Practice following at least two simple directions given at the same time.
    • Taking responsibility for picking up his/her toys, cleaning his/her own area, feeding themselves.
    • Practice blowing their noses and how to use a tissue.
