Alan Bronstein grew up in West Oak Lane, attended Central (218), Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA with graduate work at Temple for International Business, St. Joe’s for education, and Arcadia for a masters in chemical education.
After teaching right out of college for a few years including stints at Girls’ High, Central, and Dobbins, Alan took a position in international marketing at Grove Crane Co. in Shady Grove, PA as a trainee to become an international marketing manager. After 3 years because of a recession he was appointed the district manager for S. America – a position he held for 3 years until the company brought him back in house to train others to do those jobs. (There’s that teaching again.)
Two years later another recession hit and the company shrunk from 4000 employees to 1000. Alan and his wife had seen it coming and she had opened a video store. So, Alan just transitioned into it. Four years later he was injured in an auto accident and sustained a spinal cord injury, becoming paralyzed from the chest down. After going through rehab and seeing there was so much he had enjoyed doing in the shop that was no longer possible, they sold it and moved back to the Philly area.
After being a day trader for 2 years he felt the need to get back out among people . . . and found that he could still teach. Twenty-four years later he retired from teaching chemistry at Central.

Being born and raised as a first generation here in Philadelphia, I've always wanted to somehow give back to the city. Starting H&H Physical Therapy helped me focused on providing rehabilitation for the underserved / low-access communities in the comfort of their own homes.
I've earned my undergraduate degree at Temple, taught second grade for a year here in Philadelphia, was an Activities Director at a nursing home, before then pursuing my doctorate in Physical Therapy at Temple. I compliment my business with teaching on Tuesdays and Thursdays at St Joe's for their physical therapy graduate program, providing pro-bono rehabilitative services, and volunteering.

Arthur Marcus is an architect, photographer and historic preservationist in South Florida since 1992. A native of Philadelphia, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Temple University and a Master of Architecture from Carnegie Mellon University.
I have maintained my practice of Architecture for over thirty years in South Beach / Miami Beach and in Fort Lauderdale with a diverse clientele. I served on the City of Miami Beach Design Review & Historic Preservation Board for four years, one of which as Chair. I currently serve as Vice-Chair of the City of Fort Lauderdale Historic Preservation Board.
I also recently published a book on my photography; ‘The Architecture of Whimsy - Mid 20th Century Modern Architecture in South Florida.’
My photography concentrates on portions of a structure that speak as a new photograph. As Georgia O’Keefe inspires us to look closer; so do I look closer into creating the new photo.
At Central High in Philadelphia (225) I had the inspiring English professor Dr Gerald Hamm, who had the class initially write a one page story. Then we summarized that story into one paragraph. Next the assignment was to summarize that paragraph into one sentence. Finally that sentence was condensed into a single word. This is what I strive towards in my photography.

My name is Bakary Samasa, and I am from the class of 274! I grew up in Frankford in NE Philly and was fortunate to attend Central from 2011-2015. At Central, I ran xc and track while being involved in social justice efforts. After Central, I attended Dickinson College on scholarship where I majored in Biology and graduated in 2019. At Dickinson, I was a student-athlete and performed summer research under the mentorship of Dr. John Henson that led to multiple peer-reviewed publications. Following Dickinson, I was awarded an Intramural Research Fellowship to perform research in the lab of Dr. Brant Weinstein at the NIH. I studied the meninges (akin to the helmet of the brain) and how it is vascularized using Zebrafish as a model organism. Currently, I am a 2nd Year PhD Student at Penn Medicine in the Cell and Molecular Biology graduate program where I am studying how cells change their shape to become tissues during development. My work will further our understanding of how this process works in normal and injury contexts. I am really excited to be returning back to my alma mater!

After graduating from Central, I entered the then 5-year combined medical program between Penn State and Jefferson Medical College. I completed a medical internship and residency at Hospital of University of Pennsylvania, followed by 2-years in the US Public Health Service at the CDC. Then, I moved to Yale University Medical School for 3 years of training in Medical Oncology. My first job was at Fox Chase Cancer Center; after 9 years there, I moved to Thomas Jefferson University where I attained the rank of Professor of Medicine.
My career included seeing patients with advanced cancer and conducting laboratory research on cancer immunology and immunotherapy. I developed a novel therapeutic cancer vaccine, which was the basis of a number of patents. The patents enabled me to co-found a biotechnology company whose purpose was to further develop the vaccine and attempt to commercialize it. Although the company lasted almost 15 years, it was only partially successful. I held the position of Chief Medical Officer of the company for 4 years.
In 2011, I retired from the practice of medicine, but remained active in the biotech industry. Four years ago, two friends and I started a second biotech company, and I continue to serve as Chief Medical Officer. We work on cancer immunotherapy and have two projects related to the vaccines and immunological testing for Covid-19. I have had the privilege of publishing about 100 papers in numerous medical journals and presenting my research at medical meetings around the world.

After graduation from Temple Medical School, I pursued a career in Diagnostic Radiology, which I found extremely rewarding. I interpreted all types of examinations, including x-rays, ultrasounds, CAT scans and MRI as well as performing many kinds of needle biopsies.
Radiology always interested me because it was a specialty which solved mysteries - why does my shoulder hurt? Why am I vomiting? What is this lump? Did I break my ankle or sprain it? Why do I have headaches? Why am I losing weight? In virtually every case, imaging provides the answer.

Larry A. Sklar, 225, has inventions in biotechnology including the development of high-throughput flow cytometry and its application to drug discovery for a number of diseases. The technologies formed the basis of UNM Lobo Rainforest start-up IntelliCyt Corporation, a company that Dr. Sklar co-founded to develop the HyperCyt® System sample handling technology that allows flow cytometers to screen biological samples in suspension 30-40 times faster and with greater accuracy and cost efficiency than conventional approaches. In July 2016, the company was sold to international biotech company Sartorius AG for $90 million, representing the largest acquisition to date of a local startup company spun out of UNM technology. As the director of the Center for Molecular Discovery, he has made New Mexico internationally known as a hub for flow cytometry research and technologies. HyperCyt-based systems are now finding their way into mainstream screening labs. In doing this, he has given a tool to researchers everywhere to discover more effective ways to understand and treat cancers, infectious diseases and many other biological applications, and built multiple teams of inventors and innovators along the way that are reflected in his patent portfolio and commercialization activity. These contributions have led to his election as a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors and the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering.

Both of my children--Amity Quinn 261 and Kieran Quinn 264--preceded me at Central. I had been a college professor in Oregon, Ohio, and New Hampshire before moving to Philadelphia. I served as a lecturer in the English Department of the University of Pennsylvania from January 1989 through summer term 2003 and also taught several semesters at Arcadia 2001-2003. Dr. Pavel encouraged me to shift to Central, and I was hired by the School District in December 2002. I taught Freshman and Junior English for a month then switched to Sophomore and Senior English with 262 my first semester. I taught Junior and Senior English for several years until Ms. Geiger assigned me to all Senior classes, including AP. By then the International Baccalaureate Program was incepted at Central, and I became the first TOK (Theory of Knowledge) teacher until the Program was doubled, when I was joined by KD Davenport. When my first grandchild was born in Canada in March 2018, I was ready for different challenges and retired in June, spending the fall in Calgary with Rhys. However, I missed the excitement of the classroom and returned to Penn until the middle of the pandemic. My Central years were some of the happiest of my life, and I would love to share with current students some of what I learned from my former students.

My college years at Temple (BA, 1973, Psychology and MS, 1974, Biokinetics) left me "up a tree" in the tight job market during a very severe (mid 1970s) recession. I stumbled into a career in the financial markets through a series of fortunate accidents - and with the help of a few very kind and patient mentors.
Although raw intelligence helps, it by no means the primary determinant of success. Discipline, humility, a "no-bull" understanding of your own psychology (both strong and weak points), and a gut-level ability to know when something doesn't pass the "sniff test" are far more important.
I am one of those lucky few who stumbled into the right career. My career is not a job. It is a challenge and fascination for me. The word "retirement" is not in my vocabulary.

I grew up in walking distance of Central, the first person in my immediate family to go on to college. I really enjoyed science and math courses, but struggled with other courses.
I entered the Engineering program at Penn, but my interests gradually expanded. I graduated with a degree in basic Chemistry, worked in a lab for one year, then entered Stanford Medical School. Ultimately, I chose Pediatrics. After residency at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, I practiced as a community pediatrician for 39 years, mostly back in. the Philadelphia area.
Pediatrics has been a very satisfying and gratifying career, but I also like to focus on the evolution and redirection that occurred along the way.in my path toward a career choice.

I’m Steve Adelman, MD, an addiction psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and professional coach. Currently in private practice, I have worked as a teacher and leader in a major academic medical center; served on the board and practiced in the delivery system of a large multispecialty medical group; and, directed a nationally renowned physician health program. I trained at Harvard (summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa), Penn Medical School, and Harvard’s McLean Hospital. I learned important life lessons when my Internet start-up, HeadDocs, vanished abruptly with the bursting of the dot.com bubble. I envisioned and produced www.MedPEP.org , a podcast to help physicians overcome personal and professional burnout. My career in psychiatry has been deeply satisfying and I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm for this calling with others.
Over the past 10 years I have worked with more than 1000 pre-meds, medical students and physicians as clients and patients. Their distress is a by-product of our poorly organized and, at times, misguided, medical industrial complex. You can read more about this in the AdelMED Insights section of www.AdelMED.com ; many of these postings have been picked up by KevinMD and Psychiatric Times.

Throughout my years at Central High School, 2010-2014, I had the pleasure of having multiple very helpful and even inspirational Career Day Speakers. I greatly appreciated this day in High School and would love to give back to the current student body.
I have spent time working in the city of Philadelphia at the District Attorney's Office, Parks and Recreation Dept., as well as now currently at DHS.
I understand the desire for our bright youth to want to leave the city of Philadelphia as I once shared that desire, however I feel as though it could greatly benefit students to hear from as past student who did stay local and works in city government. I very much look forward to this opportunity.
